If you set the piston up in exactly the right spot, the flywheel runs free until it hits compression and its momentum should carry you through, so it's not actually hard to kick, but when it kicks back like a mule, it can be extremely painful to your ankle and Achilles' tendon.

Time to get pocorn.
Some will hate me for this, but k&n and fram have the best marketing strategies out there. Ever cut open a fram cardboard oil filter?
If you want performance and filtration use a foam filter,or fit a bigger air filter and use paper. I always find dust behind cotton filters,me no likey.

Use K&N. I use it on all my cars. Toyota, Audi, Mini. The only one that I didn't like was the cone one like many other people that posted. It was loud. I went back to getting the original airbox filter housing.

Has anyone tried placing a dish-shaped shroud around the K&N cone filter to direct the noise forward? Have a look at an S&S air filter housing (for Harleys) for an interesting design that could maybe be adapted to the Mini. It has a formed cover that turns the air 180 degrees that comes to a point in the center of the carb mouth.
