Quick question to all that are knowledgeable. Ive got a 1990 998 city E and wondered if anyone could tell me what my final drive may be before I possibly start looking for a new one to give it a little more pep along with some other engine modifications.

Thanks all.

If original, I think it will most likely be the 3.105:1.  The earlier 10" wheel City 'E's had a 2.95:1, but the later cars (like yours) had standardised by then.

3.1 stock. But after almost 30 years of modifications you're never sure...
Best thing is to put a mark on the tire, jack 1 wheel up , put the car in 4th and see how many times the engine rotates in 1 turn. 3.44 and 3.76 are nice fdr's for 998's.

Ive been thinking of changing it out for a 3.4:1 to give it a little more zoom, although my first 998 i had 15 years ago was standard apart from the stage 1 kit I fitted and that used to go like the clappers in my eyes.

the current 998 i have, well technically 1062 with its +80 overbore, its also treated to a calverST3010 cam, head port and polished to 1098 spec valves along with fully balance bottom end and MED lightened flywheel and a HIF38 to help it breathe.

Should go really well with a 3.4 then

With your engine spec I would be going 3.76

It was standard 998 fitment before folks became noise and economy obsessed

I've got a 3.76 on my 998. At 60mph the engine is at 4000rpm so it goes up hills really well, and will cruise for hours

If I was to ever run a 998, I'd almost certainly look to a 3.65 FD or perhaps 3.76. If it has a 'mid range' cam, probably even consider a 3.9.

Hi Moke,

I have a Mini K diff in my car (souped up 1293). Drove Melbourne-Perth-Darwin @ 4000 rpm. The stereo and CB radio were virtually unusable due to noise! (Weber sitting behind the speedo didn't help...   )

Hey Mikal!

Yeah, that's normally a 3.65.

I can only speak for myself here, and maybe it's the way I set my cars up, but in the Minis and in particular in the Moke, Cruising at 3900 - 4200 RPM, I can hardly hear the engine or the exhaust, though the Minis are a little louder inside, but not to the point where I can't hear the Radios. In the Moke, the loudest thing I can hear is the damn Zipper Ends chingling on the body - drives me mad !!  Putting the boot in, of course they are louder, but not objectionably so.

I guess in your case, with a Weber almost in your face, it doesn't help, but on the cruise, it shouldn't be that bad.

Fitting a taller FD to these case (if NA) means that you will need to open the throttle more as they don't make enough power at lower revs to cruise, when the drag of the body is taken in to account at higher speeds,  at very light throttle openings, resulting in less than optimal fuel consumption and more noise in the cabin. I have tried a 3.2 and a 3.1 FD in one of the Minis and I hated it with a passion, couldn't swap it back out fast enough.

TIP: Doing long trips - fit a small bore exhaust (Mine are around 1-1/2")  ;D

Is there something about the economy gear ratios that mean you have to be careful when selecting a crown wheel and pinion gear ratio.

Something to do with the drop gears making the box close or wide ratio making first gear a bit useless ?

I may have just dreamed it of course

The 'economy' drop gears were only fitted to 1275cc engines and then only the Metro HLE and (I think) some later export Minis.  It's otherwise unlikely to find them in a Mini, particularly a 1000.

Even the early City E had 1:1 drops and standard A+ gear sets.  Just a long FD.

Thanks all.

I would recommend that you put the engine number into John Guess's engine technical page at http://www.guess-wor...Tech/engine.htm to see what FD that shows up and re-post the result on here.
