I was about to dynamat my floors but I'm guessing you wouldn't recommend it Ben? I've got brand new normal underlay to put in as I had a fuel leak that ruined my original rubber topped stuff and some of the factory bitumen deadening stuff.

Dynamat is very good and a lot more efficient than the factory stuff as it is much lighter.

What you need to remember is that it's an anti-drum pad. You only need enough to take the drum out of the panel you are applying it to.

Here is one I did with OE spec pads

8yTZtXk.jpg

You don't need any more than that and it certainly doesn't need to go on the bulkhead or toe board in my opinion.

If you want to put any in the boot, just put a square or round pad in the centre of the wheel well and this is enough. Any more is just a waste of time and money.

The only other places to put them really is inside the quarter panels and inside the door skins but again, one pad is enough to stiffen things up and take out the drum.

Cheers

Ben

Thanks Ben that's pretty much the area that the petrol leak has ruined the factory stuff so I'll just do the rear floors and leave the fronts factory then :-)

I have finally finished removing the anti drum from the floors

YysazLm.jpg

With that done, the shell is now completely stripped of every last thing

dI92rFu.jpg

Well not quite everything....

9W8QuKA.jpg

I decided to take it off prior to sand blasting after having a look down the windscreen boxing panels with a boroscope and found some rust in there so this makes more sense.

skv8YXF.jpg

lLfWNWW.jpg

I just sliced the roof off close to the gutter to get the bulk out and then removed the edges after which requires grinding out the welds and then peeling back the edges like this

OmIrTvd.jpg

bdTZ2dN.jpg

And once that is done, the outer edge that sits up against the gutter the other side of the weld that I ground through needs to be peeled off.

Overall, it's a very lengthy mind numbing job but not at all difficult.

Now it really is ready to go off for blasting

Ill trailer it over there tomorrow.

Cheers

finally ! some rust - we all new it was going to to be there.  and by the look of it 26p in loose change.  all i've found so far is a .410 cartridge, a handful of .22 air rifle pellets and a load of sand

meticulous work as usual Ben

I think the treasure totaled 53p.

I also found an old tear of type ringpull from an old drinks can. When was the last time cans had those?

Yep, rust has been found but not anything that will need welding or repairing for that matter, the sand blasting will see it all off.

Cheers

So the roof gets split at the seam? Will it be reused or will the car be getting a new roof panel? Can you get new roof panels?

Yep.

Some people fit used roofs and join them in the posts but as this roof is being replaced due to the owner not wanting a sunroof, I shall fit a skin which you can get new.

We are going for an MPI skin as this has the roof ariel hole which the owner would like.

Cheers

Well that's the shell all packed up and off to the blasters

YgJCgvm.jpg

I'm hopefully going to collect the subframes on Sunday so they can be painted next week and I can start to assemble them whilst the shell is away.

Once back to the workshop, I started stripping down the running gear ready to clean and paint

I haven't photographed everything so here are the highlights

Not really much to write about today but here is what has been going on.

I have been sorting out the running gear and suspension, continuing to strip down the parts ready to clean and paint

Here are some of the parts laid out

DxXkhg7.jpg

And these bits (hubs, driveshafts, steering arms, top arms and cv joints are the parts that i have scrubbed and de-rusted so far

6wfeePx.jpg

The subframes and some small parts are coming back from the blasters tomorrow so I can start to think about getting them painted and reassembled.

The shell is now being sandblasted next week as the guy I usually have do the shells is away and I would prefer to have him do it and know that I will get a perfect result without distortion etc. At least it's there waiting for him.

Cheers

Ben

New shocks, upgraded brakes, hi-lo's and new doughnuts.

We are currently in discussions about engine mods too now.

This morning I received some of the parts back from the blasters.

Everything has come up nicely. There is some pitting to some of the parts but these are on top of the subframe which will never be seen and on the brake backing plates.

I shall put plenty of primer on the subframe and then flat it back to bury most of that however.

I requested they come back in bare metal so I can prime them myself so that's what I did next.

Everything got a through blow off and degreasing before hanging them in the booth

QnFP4Kg.jpg

2uSizEB.jpg

And I also prepped the bits I had stripped and degreased

Q1wFQKb.jpg

There wasn't enough room for everything so Ill do those another time

QdCyOuJ.jpg

Then some primer

9PcYsA6.jpg

1UAPEEJ.jpg

IMEHW2I.jpg

QSclxxx.jpg

rTMjYLi.jpg

I then painted the rough castings black.

grQMnnG.jpg

R8cf9cR.jpg

I did also paint the hubs and top arms but didn't take a picture for some reason.

All of the other parts will be painted black but i first want to flat the primer to even out the pitting and get the best possible finish.

Cheers

Ben
