One for the gearbox types.
I was hoping to get away with just a diff rebuild but now I can see inside the box, the inboard side of the main bearing looks very strange.
When I compare this to the spare box I have, the outer race covers the ball bearings. Anyone seen this before? It looks to me like the balls have worn through the race relief because of heavy axial load but I cant find any other evidence of a major event.

By any chance is your casing got the four holes for the bearing retainer? I just rebuilt a box with the same bearing, it came out fine with no issues and was serviceable again

No, this is a 5626 casing so only the three bolts.

Many bearings these days are 'wasted' so you do see much of the balls in that bearing, it maybe normal.
Check for play, both radial and axially in the Mainshaft, these should be none.

It seems solid every which way, you also cant move the balls laterally either. I would have expected the plastic caging to have shattered if it had seen significant impact but its all in one piece.
I put new parts in the diff and that seems healthy again so Im starting to think its best left as is, separating the box and block is bound to be another can of worms!
