Might be worth doing the DIY/gear set deal and sell them on. There's always someone who will want them.
good point -
One last stupid question.
Is it possible to have helical gears but with straight cut drops?

thanks all for your valued input - on consideration and really thinking about what i want for my car, and from a daily driver, and the practicalities, ive decided not to go for them. I like the ratios i have, i can accelerate fine and can cruise at 70-80 on the motorway just fine - im a speed limit driver so dont need rally type acceleration and i also value my clutch lasting a while.
If it aint broke dont fix it i suppose.

For a road car you seriously do not want SC drop gears. I have them and they are coming out shortly. Even on a full-spec rally car they are horrible on road sections where a crash helmet is not worn and on the road I always use ear plugs.
Why anyone would want that horrible noise is quite beyond me.

Yes you can but why anyone would want them is beyond me. I removed mine last year and suddenly the car is enjoyable to drive long distances again. There is a downside, I can now here all the other noses the car is making

Stick them on Ebay and watch them fly just put ROAD RALLY, RACE, DOWNTON, SPEEDWELL, COOPER S, PADDY HOPKIRK, MADE OF GOLD in the description

I feel Cooperman has well hit all bases on your proposed new Gear Set.
1st gear - 29 teeth, Ratio - 2.54:1
To perhaps better illustrate what Cooperman was saying here in regards to Final Drive Ratios needed to really make these CR sets work, the stock 2nd Gear Ratios are between 2.2 and 2.07:1 (depending on which set) and 1st Gears are between 4.0 and 3.3:1 (again, depending on which set)
So, with a new 1st of the SC Set, it's fairly close to what you are likely to have as a 2nd Gear now.
Try driving around for a while without using 1st gear;- Off the line at lights with traffic, up hills and be sure to include a hill start too.

Right so this means clutch issues? first gear being more like my current 2nd?
sorry folks for being a dummy, not really 100% sure I know what you mean on this one.
Can I also ask, as a theoretical question, as 1st gear is already straight cut in my helical set up (so im told) - could I not just buy 2nd and 3rd straight cut and swap them out , leaving 4th as a quiet helical and the drops as helical?
What I mean is, do I need to buy the full kit or just replace 2 and 3 relatively easily.?
So you get the whine in 1st 2nd and 3rd, nice quiet cruising gear .

nope you need to swap the full kit, as the layshaft is made as one peice.

If you really after after a closer ratio gear set for the road, the Original 60's Cooper S and later the 1275GT had them and they are helical gears too.
To swap to these ratios, in you don't have single or twin line gear now, there's only the First Motion Shaft (which has a gear on it) and the Laygears that need to be changed.
