I have (as far as I can tell) a pretty standard 998 engine in my Marcos. Carb is a HS4 (pre-waxstat? see photos) with K&N cone filter. Currently using an ABD needle which seems to be in good condition. Car seems to hesitate when cold, once up to temperature runs fine. Planning to get a carb service kit from Minispares - assuming I don't need a full repair kit as it's running okay?

Is this the best needle? Looking fr economy over performance as this is a daily driver. Apologies for the quality of my photos, flash on my phone decided to stop working so had to juggle the phone and a torch to take them...

I run an AAU in my 998

Standard A+
HS4 carb
Stage one kit

Runs sweet and passes the MOT no issues.

You also want the float bowl lid with the overflow(piped away from the exhaust)

Thanks cal - MOT is on Saturday, it should pass okay as it's still the same setup as before. Will order an AAU along with the service kit. Is this the right kit for my carb? http://minispares.co...ts/WZX1852.aspx - can't find any alternative float bowl lids on Minispares that are differnet to the one I already have.

If the mintylamb site was still working I could compare what needles are available, don't want to have the hassle of ordering several to find the right one!

Yes that kit is correct for your car, I would use the AAU as someone above mentioned

If you both things car should run perfect

I too am looking for needle suggestions. Run a standard HS4 with a stock 998. Whats good for balance between power and economy?

Now my car has passed its MOT (on the second attempt!) I've just ordered the AAU needle (and service kit) as suggested above so will let you know how it goes.

Well, I had hoped this would be sorted this weekend, but not yet...

I had decided it would be easier to get a reconditioned carb and do a straight swap. Did this on Friday, took a while as had to modify the bulkhead as the new carb was a waxstat and was fouling. Got it up and running but was misfiring, spent some time yesterday fiddling with mixture, idle, different dashpot oil etc. but getting nowhere.

Took it for a run this morning then noticed there is a fuel leak from the new carb! Took it off, tried tightening the connection in the bottom of the float bowl but still leaking so needs to go back.

Put the old carb back on at the moment, will try fitting the service kit next weekend - as long as it runs well enough to get me to & from work until then...

Not yet but I hope to in the next few months! They are a bit hard to come by in Malaysia. My mini mechanic says he knows of a used RC-40 twin box someone wants to sell, but I told him I'd like the full shabang, intake and exhaust manifold along with the RC-40 exhaust.

So right now its fully stock, rusty manifold and all!
