I'm in need of something that's gonna lift my car up to a decent height, the jack I'm using now just doesn't have the reach I need. Was looking at getting a better jack which will lift higher but came across this car lift that lifts the car up from the wheel.

Anyone have any experience with this type of lift, no too bothered if a mini wheel is too small. Was thinking more along the lines for my normal cars, figured that would let me easily put axle stands on the sill or wherever I want to place them without fighting for space from the jack. Don't want to spend that money if it's crap tho and I can't afford anything super fancy.

That one is made using a farm jack, pretty crude really. I think the principle is fine just would like a better one.

That is a daft way to lift a car.

 

A good quality trolley jack or a scissor type ramp thing that goes under a car would be better.......like.......

Only problem with that scissor type is that is makes working under the car very awkward and I'm wanting something that will let me get under the car as freely as possible. A lot of my cars are too low to get onto normal drive on ramps but I had considered getting ones that you can drive up then jack the platform up even more (but I'd need to jack the car up anyway to get the ramps under it) or thought about spending the extra and get something like this.

There is no way the first option is a safe way to lift a car to work on. Also if you were doing any thing structural it is likely to twist a Classic Mini. I think the height adjustable ramps look good. I have a large (old) trolly jack and axle stands and they have done me well over the years. You could probably get a good quality trolley jack off Ebay of a tyre fitting firm in your area.

A mate of mine has an alloy machine mart one that is low entry and weighs nothing - or certainly less than my steel Sealey heavy weight. But since buying that I have bought a van so i'm happy I have a 2.5 ton jack rather than an alloy one as most don't rate that heavy.

 

I reckon a good jack and some large axel stands are the best way to work under a car.

I've got a 2 tonne jack at the minute but it doesn't lift as high as I want. I like the height adjustable ramps, they seem a good option and the bonus is you can lift both sides equally.

Where did you get yours panky?

I don't think you can beat a decent jack and 4 axle stands. With ramps brake cleaning and adjustment is impossible so you need stands anyway. With ramps you're pretty much limited to draining oil and playing with the exhaust.

Only they look a bit skinny to me. I'd make them at least square on the flt section.

Need to give some thought as to how to design it so you could remove a wheel!!

I got them on special offer a few years ago. You can slip in an axle stand and let either one down individually if needed, so you can work on the suspension/brakes. I've also lifted my campers up on them - very powerful.

Recently bought one of these from machine mart on one of their vat free days, low enough to get under the gearbox of a lowered mini and lifts to over 500mm, very pleased with it.

4 axle stands is not good and just about every set i have seen say not to use more than one pair.

 

drive it onto some ramps. chock the wheels and jack the rear up onto axle stands. or another pair of ramps of some suitable blocks.

Yeah I think those hydraulic ramps look ace, can't justify spending that much money tho. Well I can justify it, just don't have that much money to spend. Think I'll just get a decent jack and put up with the extra hassle of using it until I can afford those hydraulic ramps.
