I'am about to renew the front wheel bearings & possibly ball joints on a 1989 998cc Mini, so will need to purchase my 1st ever torque wrench - about time too. My question is, whats the lowest & the highest torque settings on the classic Mini? Can anyone recommend the ideal torque wrench to buy? Draper is my usual brand of choice. I did here once that its ideal to have 2, one for the lower torque settings & one for the higher settings. Anyones help is much appreiciated.

you will need two as the ones suitable for the big numbers will not cover the lower setting.

see the sticky above listing all the settings.

Just bought my big torque wrench ready for my rebuild from Norbar. UK made and its reversible for hub nuts that are left handed thread. Its a great bit of kit and well priced. I got the 300NM version.

Most 1/2" Drive wrenches will cover 99% of the car, it's only two Nuts in the Gearbox and if you ever go over to Disc Brakes that you'll be needing more than what most of these will do.

I'd suggest something that covers the range of 20 to 120 ft/lb would be 'sensible'.

+1 for Moke Spider's comments. Your typical 1/2 inch drive torque wrench will cover from about 25-150ftlb. If you're not in a hurry to get one keep a look out for the Aldi or Lidl offers, they sometimes have them in for about £20 and they are very reasonable quality.

And if you're working on the suspension, remember that one the most safety critical torque settings on a Mini are the wheel nuts.

Halfords Professional ones are fantastic, I think they're rebranded Norbars...

I've got the 60-300nm one and I love it. ALWAYS unwind them after use

Ah yes, always unwind after use. This a precision piece of tooling, so needs to be kept well. What is the torque setting in lbs for the front big nut that holds the hub assemblies?
