Ben, what make shears do you use to shape the metal and what gauge metal are you using?

Thanks

Jason

I don't tend to use shears or snips. I use mainly my air cut off tool with 1mm cutting discs or the 4.5" angle grinder with 1mm cutting discs

I use 0.8 generally for body panel bits and 1-1.2 for the more structural sections depending on what they are.

It's always best to measure the thickness of the metal on the panel you are repairing so that you can match the new steel to it

Hows progress Ben

Simon

I have been getting on with the prep work today.

I started with the N/S

UK46wl3.jpg

This was the side that I pulled the thick chunk of filler out of the arch

I removed the various layers of filler and paint from the area and dressed out the shallow depression in the bottom of the quarter panel.

rwIH48a.jpg

Then it got a thin layer of regular body filler to bring up the remaining low points.

That was then rubbed down and a thin layer of finishing stopper was applied

Which was then rubbed down

You can see in the pictures that I have done the step too but didn't remember to get any photos.

Ill finish the prep on the back and other side tomorrow and we will soon be ready for primer.

Cheers

Ben

Thanks Ben, I had enough of welding and panel replacement so decided to work on my current project. Feeling the itch for a TR6 next to do some work on. Your work is amazing and inspiring.

My work colleague and I restored a TR6 two years ago that had been off the road for 30 years. It had already been painted however all the mechanical, trim, interior, exhaust etc need major attention. Got it finished and it looks lovely, I'd be very interested in hearing if you have one or are going to get one :D

Ben, your work is fantastic. I wouldn't hesitate to put any vehicle in for repair with you, your work is 2nd to none!  :highfive:

Sadly, only another small update today. I had to leave at 2pm for an emergency dental appointment after breaking a tooth.

Here is what I did get done though

First the other arch was sanded back as well as the C pillar joins

And a base layer of filler was applied

Which was then rubbed down and shaped accordingly

Before finishing off with the fine finishing stopper

Then I swallowed a brave pill and drilled the hole for the second tank

And then prepped the back end using a scotchbrite and palm sander with 320 grit discs

More prep tomorrow

Sorry to hear about the tooth, how did you break it?

I think most will agree that you still get more work done in a day than almost anyone :D

I broke it eating.

There was an old metal filling that had been in there over a root filling since I was a teenager and it decided to fall out and break the side of the tooth too.

It's now bodged up until next week when they will start working on a crown for it

Cheers

Ben

Great progress Ben.....love the right hand side filler neck hole, that must have been a sweaty palms moment :-)

Look forward to seeing the body in a fresh coat of paint soon! Is the owner going for period straight from the gun finish or mirror smooth colour sand/polish?
