Today was the final push for the panel work on this Mini and there was still lots to do.

First up, I welded in the crossmember end

nKVS1dy.jpg

And then the outer sill and jacking point needed to go on

22W1qhT.jpg

There was an issue with the step. A replacement had been fitted previously and being a Magnum type step, the folds were wrong. I am sure some of you will be aware of this problem with those panels.

wpssr3O.jpg

I can get the step to come over to meet the sill but only with the sill off. I could dress the sill in to meet the the step but I had noticed that the step sat in too far from the bottom of the door as this earlier picture shows

2Tpon7w.jpg

I'm not happy leaving it like that so...

I spot welded some washers to the step and intervals

sd4MwaO.jpg

And then used a slide hammer to pull the step over

o66P1lx.jpg

It's not under any tension in the photo as I couldn't hold it and take the pic

But once held over, I clamped it up to get this

AxjE89Q.jpg

And then spot welded it

SlzFR9T.jpg

YwJTD0Q.jpg

And now the door looks acceptable

3AfgWn5.jpg

I needed to spot weld the front edge of the sill to the step and the bottom of the A panel but it looked a bit suspect

wTWjHNQ.jpg

I cleaned it back to reveal this

kn3T6Qv.jpg

I decided to patch it up to give me something to weld to

3FEMrmp.jpg

Next up was the quarter panel

VA83S1v.jpg

Once that was cut out, I had this

RpAL31w.jpg

So I made up a new piece

tVdxBPK.jpg

Which I then trimmed up and clamped in place ready to weld

HXfcoBA.jpg

And then welded and dressed

9oqcHRw.jpg

I also spot welded the companion bin bottom to the floor, Repaired the front edge of the companion bin where it spot welds to the inner sill as well as welding up the jacking point to the outer sill.

No pictures but the same process as the other side.

Next, I dressed the weld seam where the new inner sill joins the existing floor and gave everything a spray up

The only panel work remaining now was the flitch repair. Unfortunately, I just ran out of time.

I need to empty the workshop tomorrow ready for the floor to be painted on Friday so I shall finish that last small repair in the new year.

The last thing today then was to get the car rolling. I put on the wheels, dropped it to the floor and then took some pics

And that is the last update of 2017.

Happy Christmas everyone  :xmas:

Happy new year everyone.

Time to get back on this Mini and get it ready for paint

Vr1H8r3.jpg

The main bit left to do welding wise is the flitch repair

This is the area minus the bit I cut out last time

mgLmtW6.jpg

it's exactly the same process as the other side so first needs to be cleaned back

YFZDyWq.jpg

Then I needed to cut out a section of floor, toe board and some more of the inner wing

NHwfqIh.jpg

5NNDs8u.jpg

First is the floor pan piece

iB34UbG.jpg

And then the flitch bottom which gets fabricated and tacked in place. I have also began spot welding some of it too

3jdojfL.jpg

Next, the edge gets welded to the outer sill end

ogQBhiK.jpg

And then a Toe board piece gets made and tacked in

B5rjHKZ.jpg

Then I can trim and fold the flitch bottom around the toe board repair and weld everything up fully

cFbDlyL.jpg

q1AbDPI.jpg

And then have a grind up

eQGtbAv.jpg

kZQAMHf.jpg

And we are done.

Time to remove the rear subframe then

MyuGXHF.jpg

There was a bit more welding to do once the subframe was removed that couldn't be accessed with it in so that is almost finished now too.

By the end of tomorrow, I should have the old underseal removed from the underside and some of the prep started.

Thanks for looking

Ben

Today has been spent on my back underneath the Mini scraping off the 1/4" thick underseal.

I don't have any photographs of the progress so far but will pop some up next week once I have finished.I also finished the last of the welding which was a couple of plug welds on the heelboard and welding on the rear slinging brackets.

Once I finish the underside, Ill get on with the prep.

Cheers

Ben
