Have looked on line and in the tmf search function and cant fint what i,m looking for. Have swapped the starter on my build to a high torque pre-engaged unit, it was secondhand so got not wiring details. The new unit has only a single small spade connector as well as the bolt on power lead, where the old one uses 2x ,a thick brown and a small white and red. Which one do i use?.

Your 2 x thick brown wires will go on the "bolt" terminal, then you will need to put a spade connector on your white/red, which then goes on the "spade" terminal or trigger for the starter.

My existing starter has 2 spade connectors , 1x 6mm spade white/red and 1x large spade brown/red that go to the solenoid, the black main battery terminal (bolt) also has about 4x all brown wires on ring terminals.

I think your large brown/red should connect to your "bolt." Previously on the solenoid there would have been a spade terminal that was commoned with the post that the other browns were bolted onto.  So you will probably have to change the connector.  The white/red is the trigger from the ignition.

Update. I was in minispares Pottersbar today so bent their ear on this. The fat brown and red wire with the big spade is the one to use, the other is a resistance wire and used to give the coil a bit more juice when cranking, not needed now as i no longer have a coil. Thanks for peoples input.

The brown/red should be the operating wire. The ballast bypass (ignition) would be white/YELLOW. White/RED is the engine cranking feed from the ignition barrel. It would have gone direct to an inertia starter solenoid, but operates the starter relay that feeds the brown/red on a pre-engaged motor.
