hey all

Its been a while bit i have been back in the workshop fitting more bits to the ever lasting project..

I bought a non genuine quick shift and couldnt get it to fit until i had a good old plat about and here is how to fit and get them to fit with not problems at all...

First disconect the origional shifter which is easily done as it is siply located by two pins on either side of the housing.

Youe should then be left with the two locating pins.

These need to be popped out.As long as you have a good punch set select the required punch and they simply tap out with out having to un bolt the housing or disconect the linkage.

once both pins have been tapped out you will be left with two holes which the bolts on the quick shift locate to securing the quick shift unit to the housing.

My quick shift didnt fit properly in the place of the old one as the purple housing which attaches the quick shift to the origional housing didnt sit properly, causing the securing bolts to miss the two holes where the pins were tapped out of.

To solve this problem i took some rough graded wet and dry and sanded the nylon ball on the end until the quick shift unit sat in the housing correctly. It took a few attempts but in the end the quick shift fit fine and the two bolts which secure it lined up with the housing and sat in the holes where the pins were tapped out from.

i took the car for a spin ans selecting gears if fine better than before.I was worried asa i no it was a non genuine quick shift but with a bit of easy adjustment its fine. I got it from our favourite on line auctiopn site and was less then half the price of a KAD one

Hope this helps any :gimme: one who has any probs in the future

Phil

Any Ideas on how to drift out those two pins if you don't have a really good set of punches?

Would these short shift leavers make 2nd gear syncromesh problems worse, As mine often grrawls at going into me in second managed to get the hang of stoping it. But was wondering if i got one of these it would it esagerate the syimptems as i wouldent mind a shorter shift.

I never had any problems getting mine installed but it just wouldnt find reverse. Turned out the ball on the end was too big. Took some material off the ball to make it smaller and it worked.

However im one of those people who cant stand installing cheapo , s****y crap parts. If it didnt work first time then it hasnt been made right and I wouldnt dream of putting it on my mini.

2 days later bought a KAD on fitted first time worked first time job done.

I was thinking of quick shift for mine, but have no idea about it lol.
Is it simply a case of removing the gear stick and replacing with quick shift (not simply, but you know what I mean lol) or do you need the gear box out ??

Cheers

I wa sgoing to ask a question about quickshifters today so thought I'd do it in this thread rather than start another!!

For mini_legend, yes the quick shift kit replaces the existing gear lever and there's no need to take the gearbox out. Very worst case scenario you would remove the gear linkage from under the car, but that's unlikely to be needed.

My question for those that have done this, do you punch the pins out or in? That is, do i position the punch on the pin and knock it to the outside of the socket, or position the punch on the outside and punch the pin in making sure to catch it before it falls into the gear linkage box?

Bought a W&P one at Bingley.

A few hours later, with some wet & dry, a file & some grease etc all the advice from here & it's fitted !!!

Well the top half. The fit & operation was so poor that I couldn't have lived with it but I loved the look of the large alloy gear knob.

So I cut the new lever in half and TIG welded it to the original stick.

Looks fine and works like it always did........Properly.

I found it easier to punch the original pins inwards. They seemed to be lightly tapered.
I got an original KAD Quickshift (second generation with the backwards lift ring) and couldn't get it to fit on the gearchange housing at first either. You have to clean and possibly sand some of the case's dome off and make sure the Quickshift's case homes in on the dome completely so the holes line up. I didn't have to sand the ball that way at all and only had to screw in the adjustable shift stick assembly after the bell was bolted on. Don't know how bad the copies are, but you shouldn't have to make any adjustments to the quickshift assembly. It's the gear change casing that is cast rather roughly and will have large tolerances.

Had to put some spacers between gearstick tightening plate and the " purple" thingie, they lift up the stick from it´s housing and works better,,,, almost,,,, i

Only problem is price --> KAD 145 € + delievery 15€ as 128 £.....
