Unfortunately it looks like a total engine strip down and rebuild - new crankshaft and flywheel. Amazing that the engine was still running.

Bad luck.

Not only did the engine run but the clutch worked?! I pulled back and forth in gear with the engine running.

I feel it is beyond my capabilities to rebuild the engine and I couldnt afford to send it off to a specialist... I guess Id have to risk buying a 2nd Hand engine and seeing if I have better luck.

I think it was beyond the capabilities of the previous builder too!
The flywheel bolt lock tab doesnt look like the correct one for a start.

Whereabouts are you?

Well the lock tab seems to be fused to the bolt which I dont think helps anything!
Im about 5 miles from Kings Lynn in Norfolk

In that case it is the correct lock tab and bolt - thats how they should be.

Im in the process of doing whatever sort of repair I can and replacing a few bits. Ive got a new centre flywheel boss as the original got damaged.. before I reassemble everything do you all think its worth replacing the clutch plate?? I know its logical to replace consumable parts whilst they are out but I dont want to waste money on a new clutch plate if my current one is perfectly fine.

by the way starting with the clutch down is not the best practice. I know some moderns are designed to start that way but Mini is 'old-school' and you are putting pressure on parts that need to get oil like the thrust washers.

Right! Everything has been smoothed, cleaned, replaced the centre of the flywheel and torqued everything up to within an inch of its life (5flbs above what is recommended)
I seem to have a misfire but this is now how the engine sounds... does this sound like a happy mini?? It sounds a hell of a lot better to me compare to what I remember but Id love to hear all of your opinions

If you think it has a misfire do a spark test...

release bearing need little tools.

but have you got a Haynes manual? if no get one. if yes read it.

i was an amateur once. but back in the 80s armed with a Haynes manual i built engines that lasted longer than 3 weeks. change clutches and rebuild suspension. and help a few mates out along the way. Oh also made new friends.

so lets just say this. if you dont have a Haynes manual you will never manage it.

Yes I have a Haynes manual. Im only 4 months into mini ownership and its already very oily and has many folded corners of pages!

Well Ill order the parts and if it all goes wrong Ill blame you
I guess everyone has to start somewhere. The cars an ongoing project anyways so as long as Im sorted by next spring ready to enjoy my first miles in a mini!

the hard part when some asks if they can do it. we have no idea as we have no knowledge of who you are and what you can do. We can only refer you to reading the Haynes manual. if after reading it you dont feel confident then dont do it. But if you think you will give it a go then ask away with info as to where you are at with the work. Re the release bearing the flywheel does not need to come off so all you will need in addition to the normal spanners and jack is a Fork to aid the refitting of the engine mount bolts.

can i take you back to this and say.

Well Done.
