so I found this faq about the aldon yellow and red dizzys:

http://www.theminifo...advance-curves/

correct me if I am wrong but to get engine degrees and rpm both numbers in the graphs should be timed by two right?

so the red dizzy advances 20 engine degrees on top of the base advance at 5000 engine rpm

I'm yet to find an engine spec that can use those curves.

thank you. that is my experience while dyno'ing my engines too.

what dizzy do people use then. is any available off the shelf or do you get one altered?

Probably as a starting point for 'off the shelf' the Aldon Yellow I feel starts at a place closer to where you'll likely end up than just about anything else out there.

Have you also looked at programmable stuff, like the CSI ?  Unlike the 123, it actually has A Series usable Curves.

yes I have looked at the curves of both the 123 and the csi. the csi curve 1-4 actually looks good. but the 123 cures all end to late for what the dynos have said my engines have needed so far. the csi ignition distributor is just a bit pricy. as it is historic racing the hill climbing I participate in technically I need to use a lucas 65dm4 or a ducellier as I believe these were the only dizzys the metro's came with from the factory. currently I have a 65dm4 which we at one point modified when on the dyno to have the correct curve, but the springs have stretched so it was slopping around ignition timing wise so I have ended up removing the spring and locking up the dizzy and am currently running fixed timing at all revs timed in for max power. this is what I am looking to fix.

Metros were fitted with a wide range of distributors, including the 45D4 (in the 850 Metros - not sure if they were sold in the UK) and 54D4 types, so that surely gives a few more options there.

Another option I was trying to think of the other evening is the Acuspark Stealth. I'm not sure if it would be allowed under your rules, but could be worth looking in to, especially if you are doing on going engine tuning. It still used a stock distributor body, however it will need an electronic type points fitted (the 64D4 I think works here) and the auto-advance is locked out. The Acuspark Stealth is then wired in between the distributor & coil. It is then programed via a laptop with what ever curves you need. I think you can upload two curves at a time and have them switchable.

If starting from scratch with this set up, it works out around the same price as the CSI, but if you already have a usable distributor setup, then it's about half that.

I don't think the accuspark unt is available anymore. I have one fitted to my car and it runs great, although it can be a little difficult to start sometimes. The accuspark needs 10V to get it to work, sometimes when starting the voltage drops and you don't get any spark.

There is also the Aldon Amethyst, which has a MAP sensor so you can do load based advance

CB Performance in the US also have a a similar kit

I've got an Aldon Amethyst. I must say it is a great bit of kit. Will be ordering a second one when the new batch (v4) comes in for my new build. Granted I use it for the curve for super charging.

I never saw a 45d4 or a 54d4 dizzy on any of my many metro's, and never say a 850 metro either, that must be a very slow car. My metro's all had lucas 64d or 65d and one had a ducillier dizzy. But its nice to know my options :-) the 45d seems the most common dizzy on a-series cars, and seems to have more parts available than others.

All of these boxes look really nice, the cg performance and th aldon amethyst sounds and looks very similar, I wonder if it is in fact the same product?

Either way these two are a very nice way to get at perfect ignition and I will seriously considder them for my roadgoing metro, but it will not be allowed on the hill climb car if they spot it :)

the csi ignition on the other hand, this dizzy would look and work nicely with the hill climb'er.

My on HLE Metro came with a 59D4.

Here's a few pages from the Factory Metro Workshop Manual Tuning Data of various models, covering all engines from 850 Metro to the 1275 models;-

I've also put an Aldon Amethyst TPS version (as I've got twin webbers) on mine.  It's a brilliant piece of kit!  Mines a fast road car/weekend warrior.

What spec engine are you running?  My brother runs an Aldon Red on his race Cooper S and his runs very nice.

The Aldon Yellow is suitable up to Kent 286 and from the Kent 296 upwards it should be an Aldon Red.
