I'm stripping a "new" 1275 engine that I bought - so far it seems OK, there are some things I need to fix - however I have those covered.

But now I've come to the gearbox. And there is a damage to two teeth in the 1st gear cog. (2 arrows to the right)

..Now my questions is, should I rebuild the gearbox replacing the damaged wheel, or will it be OK to use it as it is?

Also; What is going on at the arrows to the left? Is that part of the synchros - or what function does this one have? It is quite beaten up :/

Throw them away, you wouldn't want to take it out again as a result of failure, those dog teeth are well chewed up on second

Probably got worn/damaged teeth in the syncro hub too.

And check the layshaft given the damage on first gear, then baulk rings etc (i.e. it needs to be revuild). As above there is damage on the second gear dog teeth, the gearbox would have been crunching on second gear (where boxes commonly start to crunch first due to frequent changes into second).

First gear has had a beating and on Second Gear, while the teeth look OK, the dogs have had it. It will always jump out of 2nd.

Looks like 2nd gear synchro is shot and taken out the teeth on the sycro hub and gear, so that will at the least be very crunchy,

Not sure what's happened to 1st, but it doesn't look good, forensic object gone through the teeth perhaps.

It's a new parts job I can hear. Now where do I buy the newparts? I have not been able to find the dogs or synchro parts anywhere. Baulk rings yes - but not the others.

...Another queston. The gearbox in my 998 A is perfectly sound - can I use that for the 1275A+ engine?

The dogs are one piece with 2nd gear, so put another way, look for a new second gear.

It appears you have a  'single line' gear set, 2nd Gear should have 26 teeth (for you to check) - P/N DAM4932

Synchro hubs are usually OK, but best to check. P/N DAM7499

<EDIT: You should be able to fit your 998 gearbox to the 1275 engine OK, however, you'll need the 1275 Primary Gear. Also, decide if you want to use the Crankcase Breather on the Transfer housing so that while it's all in bits, you can drill and tap the holes for this. Personally, this is the set up I prefer. You'll need to use the transfer housing from the 998 as it will have the matched bearing ring for the outrigger bearing. >
