The copper Washer used on the Plug from the factory is also the same as those used on the Oil Pipe (to the Oil Filter) Banjo fitting, I wonder if that's why they used them?

I did try Helicoils years ago and had limited success with them, and many others I've come across also seem to always have a drop of Oil on them. A few also pulled out, sometimes leaving things in a worse state.

These days, I make and fit an insert, and so far, been very happy with them, only now I've gone away from the copper washers to the fibre types

Lovely neat solution.

I was lucky (very lucky) to pick up a freshly re-built gearbox for £50 fairly local to me, the only problem with it was the drain plug had been helicoiled on the squiff. As my workshop consists of an ancient Black and Decker Workmate (with no milling attachment ;D ) my solution was to file the casing slightly until the head of the plug sat square to the surface, it did drip ever so slightly but a couple of turns of PTFE tape cured that. Gearbox is absolutely lovely too :D

Is anyone making these commercially?
Or anyone on here making them for sale?
Im just in the process of preparing a 5626 case and could do with one of these for "future proofing"
