May I asked where did you get the primer?  Have you used 2K Epoxy primer?  Thanks in advance.

so what seems to be working for me is rubbing it down to bare metal, doing the filler, then using an etch primer out of a can, ive been using some upol stuff, but its dark grey, for a white car not that good really ! But then the high build ive been using is 2k, its hp body 534 high build. Ive tried other ones and when sanding they have clogged, the hp stuff seems really good. Ive not used 2k epoxy as its really hard to sand. 

 

When ive done any filler, ive done the first pass, then ive added some fiber glass resin into the mix and this thins the filler out some, and ive found it much easier to get it right. 

 

Dont get me wrong, this is what i do, it works now for me, im no expert. hth

Thanks. It's nearly 40 years since I last painted a Mini and I'm torn between cellulose which I'm comfy with, and 2-pack which I had a couple of bad experiences with due to not understanding the level of respiratory protection needed! Is your paint a 2K that is fine with an appropriate mask?

thats a bit of a subject! most people in this country use an air fed mask, but for example if you watch someone like paint scociety they use the 7in1 masks. I use the 7in1 masks too, they are on ebay. I bought a fan for extraction in our garage, and also when i paint, as soon as the paint is on, im out of there. 

 

one other bit to say in my experience of painting is to buy a cheap leaf blower, when you prep the panels, if you wet flat them, it drys them out quick, when you go to paint you can blow out the dust from the area you are working, and also , you can blow the driveway clear and also very useful if you have a charcoal BBQ in the summer ;)

i have been pushing to get my rover 100 back on the road but it was raining so i painted the door on the mini. the finish was really good but i got 2 runs. one by the top and one by the handle. the top one came out easy, the one by the handle didnt go so well, but i will try to do soemthing with rather than repaint the whole door now. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

i may try and do a little blow in, i dont know if you can do that but will see. but at least the majority of it looks really good.

Ive been trying to get my rover 100 done, not had much chance to do the mini, but doing the 100 ive found out my paint problem, the gauge on the wall and the pressure at the gun are two very different things. Upping the pressure means i dont have any where near as many problems.  Ive explained it a lot more in the other projects department on my metro thread.

 

 

but it was raining and i couldnt do bits on the metro, so i painted the bonnet for the mini

 

 

 

 

 

 

made up with it, when the metro is back on the road, and i get the time back for the mini, itll be painted now in no time. I cant wait!

not much news on the mini apart from i polished the bonnet. its still nto 100% but its a lot better than before, and one panel i will call finished for now

 

 

 

when the weather picks up a bit, ill take the car outside and wet flat it all and paint it again, there is too many bits in it now to be happy with.

More confident in my spraying powers now, i painted the dash, and crossmemeber. No pics sorry.

the mini still lives, its sat there doing nothing for too long, i decided today to buy the paint for it even though i have paint. The stuff i got for the R100 seems to just work out for me, so im going to get rid of the old mini paint, and use this new stuff. Its called chromec i think, it just is nice.

 

This afternoon, i dont know what motivated me as i needed to fix a water leak on the R100, i decided to run the engine bay down on the mini and the front end too. I painted the engine bay

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

made up with that paint, i put the gun on a low paint output and a small fan almost spot, the coloured all the bits in, and then went for it with a full fan tightened up a bit, and 2 turns out on the paint. Absolutely made up with the finish, and doing bits on the R100, makes me think ill paint the mini differently to how i was before. So next will be the front end, then the side, but the side, ill colour the inside of the door, the shuts, then put the door on, and paint the whole side in one. 

 

 

Cant wait to get this car back together over winter ;)

the finish is perfect, im really impressed with the paint, the only thing is when i painted the side of the wings, as im close to the wall, i put too much paint on and got a run on both sides

 

 

 

 

 

 

now everyone goes on about this magic time of the day after to polish it, but i have found leave it a week, when its hard, then it dosnt seem to scratch at all. So hopefully i can flat the runs and just polish it. 

 

 

Also started on the front subframe, repainting process

oh so having a bit of a go on the mini. Not sure why ive all come over mini happy again but lol

I have found out a bit mistake with my painting, that i have corrected. I was using toooooo small air pipe from the compressor, i have found out that the white pipe screwfix do in 15mm for water heating etc works really well. im using bigger air lines too

so im going about the mini and doing all the bits needed before paint in one go, with wet and dry, etc, etc...

 

 

 

 

then im into doing the panels , and to be fair, apart from my arm feels like its about to drop off, this body work stuff is really nice. 

 

 

 

this is the 1293 that came with the car, i cant work out what to do with it, i have a 998 for it, and its right for the car, but i have someone interested in it, i dont know if i can part with it!

 

 

 

but the thing is, its the mini, want it totally factory. So why keep it?

its been a long time! 

 

the 1293 has sold, so i have more space in the garage now to sort out my other project [lada2103 in other projects!] as well as this one. Now the weather is getting better, i feel like being outside in teh evenings more, so i will do some on the mini. I cleaned out all the rubbish that had accumulated inside of it, and on it. Then put it on it side to have a look at what i had done underneath. the wheel arch on the back needed spraying in stone chip, and the front wing too in places, so i did that

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now one side is checked ill push it over the other way tomorrow maybe and check it that way. But today started on teh roof, its in high build, and some can etch. THe can etch is not as good as when you go to sand it the disc clogs straight away. Will only use 2k high build now

 

 

 

 

 

just have to keep at this now bit by bit.
