Really enjoying flicking through this project,.. I saw that you managed to get hold of the original Advantage interior - will you also be applying the factory decals to the outside?

yes i have 2 sets of them, i will now put it to totally standard, even the front seats. I have a lot of the parts already, wil have to spray some arches grey, but have new grey bumpers already.

I've never used Pro spray paint so can't comment on that

I run a full fan and full paint volume 

 

I would definately have a practice at getting the paint reduced correctly, air pressure right and technique down on a scrap panel before attempting the roof again as you may just end up wasting time and paint

 

Looking at the pic, the finish looks quite dry so you may be passing over too fast which won't allow the paint to flow nicely.

Remember 70% overlap on each pass too

How do you paint in the gutter i have tried everything i can think of to get the paint to go in but it kinda just cant and goes around due to the natural air flow!

 

I hadnt done 70% cover, i did just enough to keep a wet edge covered. I think ill thin it down some more next time. 

 

I had a go at polishing it today, i got most of the peal out, went 1200 then 2000, but it seems like it dosnt shine properly, there is lots of little scratches in the paint.  I used some g3 cutting compound, and some meguires stuff. I used a da buffer and some hexagon shaped pads. Ive ordered a lambs wool head , and if it comes tomorrow will try that.

1200 to 2000 is a bit too much of a leap in grades

The scratches you are seeing are probably left by the 1200

Not necessarily a lost cause but you will need to flat it further with the 2000 until those scratches are gone

 

As for the gutters, sounds like you need to check that your fan is full

If the gun isn't clean enough and there are any blockages, the fan can be uneven which won't allow the paint to atomize correctly

Hold the gun out in front of you side on with the paint in the cup and  pull the trigger

Look at the spray pattern

It should be completely even

if The spray is heavier at the top and/or bottom of the fan than the middle, you might have blocked air holes in the air cap, too high air pressure or the paint is still too thick

I always check this everytime I pick up the fun to apply a coat and adjust the gun until the fan is even

 

If the fan is even, you shouldn't have any trouble getting the paint in the gutters

 

Look up paint society on YouTube, they will probably have videos there which should help

Ah ok, so i watched maybe 3-4 hours of paint society and decided to pain the front on the car. The pressure i dropped down a fair bit actually, it was set higher than i thought, and i went for 30% thinners as that is what the girl at supertune who sells the paint said to do got. 

 

 

Did my first drop coat and it looked fine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

then 5 mins later it started to all fall off and run everywhere!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

bit gutted, and yes should have tried it on a spare panel first, but i was confident then it had too much thinners in it, and also, even though the gun is working fine, getting on those edges is hard.

 

 

SO today i flatted the runs, and the panels again with 320, then 800 wet dry, and i will leave that a week i think and paint it again. But in the mean time, i painted the rear..

 

 

 

 

 

 

That was with 10% thinners in it, maybe could have done with a little more, but i went back to my idea of doing the edges on spot with hardly any paint comming out, then going for full paint and fill fan. Now i have one panel painted that im happy with. Ill still flat it and polish it. I did  the roof now and know now lightly with 1200, then 2000, then i found a trisac? disc, and then g3 works. I may do the roof one more coat after a proper nice wet dry flat, not sure yet. 

 

 

Either way the rear looks good for me.

now, i watched lots of the paint society ben said about, and well, i ve worked out a lot of my paint problems. first was the pressure was too high, and the main one, and why i have to do the paint he edge bit first is , im painting at like 10" or more away, and the guy on the vids says about 5"

 

i painted the side yesterday with this method

now ive one side, the sills, 2 doors, and the inside of the boot to do. I may do the engine bay again as it dosnt look as good as the outside, but will asses it tomorrow ;)

so thats the shell painted! i may do the rear again, but ill look at it properly, only as i did polish threw a little bit, but ill see first. Then next the front subframe is comming off, repaint the engine bay again, and paint the subframe.

Looking great! One of the best parts is when the actual re-assembling starts, like fitting the grille and lights for example.

i have painted the door, i thought id paint it sat flat, that way, i could lay thicker coats to it, 

 

 

 

after painting it, the finish was really good. i had the mini outside so after 2 hours i hung the door, and brought the mini in

 

 

 

 

 

 

in the handle area there was too much paint and it ran lol

 

 

 

 

so ill do it AGAIN!
