Hello, I am restoring my brothers mini and currently painting the floor inside the mini. I have taken it all back to bare metal but have done this over a few months so have been left with flash rust.

I have been using a rust remover, I think it's called krud kutter paint prep and rust remover. It has worked really well and removes the rust in a few minutes and really cleans the metal up well. But it says on the tub that it contains phosphoric acid and should be washed down with water. I don't really want to soak the bare metal in water so have used damp cloths but this then results in the metal going rusty coloured in a few minutes.

If I just wipe the rust remover away with a dry cloth It is then left with a very fine white coating, I guess this is the phosphoric acid. Is it ok to paint straight over this with the epoxy primer. I have done many searches online and Im getting mixed information if it's ok to paint over or if it will cause any paint problems. Thank you

It is ok to paint over iron phosphate, but it's black. What you have is possibly carbonate or hydroxide, try washing it of with warm water.

I don't like using water either, seems a really stupid idea.

Try white spirits, then thinners to remove the white sprits residue.

Wash it with boiling water, only needs a light rinse. You're just removing the excess, the phosphoric is fine to leave on, just not too much.

Dry it with paper towels then heatgun it , any bare steel will want to flash rust if you've used phosphoric so hit it with a etch or zinc primer rattlecan straight away

Thank you for the replies. I have used panel wipe to wash/wipe it off and it looks to have worked perfect, also it helps that it evaporates very quickly.
