Not only can i not tighten the stalk on the steering column enough so that it stays there for more than a day (then it starts turning when i try to put on the indicator), but what's more annoying is that my indicators don't switch off by themselves. I'm almost positive that they used to before!!

Any ideas how I can fix this?

I believe early cars were quite different with their turn signal stalk. However, what I would try (if possible) is to remove the half of the housing through which the screws pass and put a layer or two of friction tape on its inner curved surface, then reassemble the parts. This should make the assembly tighter on the steering column and the tape should also help "stick" the parts in place over time.

I think I'll do just that seeing as i have some tape right next to me, thanks :D

Any ideas about the self-returning problem? Car is a 1990 by the way :D

there should be a lug on the back of the steering wheel that locates in a collar on the column, make sure the lug is there and engaged in the collar.
or if you have chnged the wheel for an after market one, its not unknown for the new hub not to have a lug on.

The thing is, the lug is too far out, so if i move the stalks up to it along the steering column, then they don't grip the plastic bit and so i cannot tighten them. If i move them down onto the bit where they're meant to be tightened, the lug is no longer in the little dip on the stalks..

have you had your column off or adjusted it at the bottom, there is a connector at teh bottom have a look to see if the column has slipped down, the nut at the bottom of the column may neet tightening, also check that it is the switch turning not the whole column!!!!!!
