Hi,

 

I'm currently looking to find someone who can restore my Paul Smith LE Mini. I'm based in Telford, Shropshire.

 

The work isn't too major, but I'm not equipped at home to carry out the work myself and would really like to get it completed before the end of September as I'm getting married in October and would like to use him as my wedding car.

Not incredibly local, but Surf Blue Garage do some amazing work, judging by their instragram and facebook which you see daily.

Thanks for the suggestion, They do look to have some good work, but it's probably not quite local enough. Google Maps is showing 1hr30 travel time from me.

Chap, if you want a good and quick job then you're going to have to travel. Your time scale doesn't help, I've found trying to get mine in takes months in advance to book you in. Also, have you considered a budget?

You say the work isn't too major. You need to be prepared for some home truths when the repairer starts on the sills. Looking at the corrosion on the door opening (and without seeing further pictures) I think there could be significant work involved.

Agreed. By looking at those pics you'll need inner and outer sills, door surrounds, new front end and sole floor patching. No pics of the scuttle and door skins as they could be gone too.

There a short bloke that likes posing onto of a poo brown elf, in Shropshire that occasionally does bodywork. Although, those rotten arrears aren't a simple 'patch up' job and will be hiding further rot under the surface.

I am aware that digging deeper is likely to discover more corrosion that'll need repairing also. I have looked inside the holes in the drivers side sill/door step and it actually looks pretty clear in there. The car does require a door skin the drivers side, so I have a genuine rust free replacement to bolt on. The windscreen scuttle has a few blemishes under the paint.

Budget wise, I know a good respray alone will be £1500-£2000 but just not sure about the bodywork repairs. I would only really use quality panels like Heritage etc as I want a quality job that'll last.

That's going to be a full bare shell restoration right there... just the panels could be £2k

​I had exactly the same rust on my MPI. Externally it looked the same as yours, but as soon as you start digging... 

​The MPI had terrible rust proofing at the factory. £10 says each of the studs under the floor has rusted out meaning either a patchwork of repairs, or a new floor. Check your rear arch to boot floor brackets, they'll be rusty too...

​have a read on how far I had to go to chase the rust out!

blimey nothing like leaving it late to get something done you need for september, and if they are any good they will have a waiting list. and expect to pay 5-8k to get it done depending what they find when they start working on it
