Just re shimming my idler gears, and found my gearbox idler gear bearing to be shagged. Got a new one here to fit, just how do you get the old one out? Currently the engine and box is attached together. Done a a search but not come up with much, and really looking to do it ASAP.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks

Ideally use a bearing puller. Pull/bend out the rollers and cage then use the puller to pull the outer race out.
I didn't have one, but my engine and gearbox were split so I wacked it out from behind using a socket. To get the one out of my transfer case I used a piece of threaded bar and washer and welded the washer to the bearing race. Pullers can be gotten relatively cheap or your local garage/machine shop will probably get it out in minutes (whilst you wait) with a proper puller.
I wacked the new one using a plastic dead blow hammer.
Hope that helps,
Cam.

Bearings that can't be knocked through need to be pulled out with a slide hammer and blind bearing puller - cheapish sets of pullers are available on Ebay.

I did this back along: you need just the right size washer that you can file the sides off to fit in to the bearing with the rollers removed. the problem with welding it that it can crack the case as the bearing expands in the hole.
then we moved onto the other idler bearing, this is how we did it:
Knocked out the rollers and cage by sticking screwdriver between the cage and bearing body.(imagine it's in the casing)
Then got a longish bolt, a thick washer which we cut the sides off to the size of the holw
it can then be put on the bolt and slid into the the bearing.
then get a plate/bar to got over the caseing and wind the nut with a few washers onto it, you may need to put a spacer in like my pic.

There is another method, using a washer with the sides ground off...........
Just as I was typing the man himself replied ^^^
