OK thanks.

I'm not sure if you have a vented Oil Filler Cap, these are a bit taller than the sealed ones and you can ID them by the vent slots around them and the filter inside them.

It does look like the Carb does have a CCV port, however, there's a hose connected to it going under the car somewhere ???

Also, most of those types of rocker covers, the 'vent' on them is fitted with a one way valve which will only let Air IN. They do not normally breath out through them at all.

The way that's plumbed it won't breath which is what you're finding.

I'd suggest starting off with fitting a Timing cover that has a breather as that can be done with the engine in. You'll have to look for a fair bit those as your engine won't have the timing chain tensioner and the matching backing [late, so it's not a straight forward swap. There were some older non-tensioner type timing covers though that do have breathers - or you can fit on to the cover you have. This may also mean fiddling with Fan spacers too to get clearance from the fan.

Connect that breather (via the Oil Separator) to the CCV Port on the Carb.

There are some after market breathers that can go on in place of the mechanical fuel pump, but these alone won't do the job and they also don't have an Oil Separator, so the car will be very smokey.

Plug up the breather on the rocker cover and fit a Vented type Cap.

You may find though if the rings aren't sealing as well as they should that you need an additional breather in which case, I'd suggest swapping out the transfer case for one that will take a breather.

No easy simple fix I'm afraid.

<EDIT: The rings need a high pressure differential across them to bed in and seal. Poor Crankcase Ventilation can reduce the pressure differential to the point where they may not seal or have bedded in (and glazed the bore). Sort the ventilation, give it some stick for a bit before deciding if the bores are now glazed. You might be lucky.>

The HIF6 crankcase vent tube is currently plugged and the hose going south is the float chamber overflow/ breather. it's just an open hose pointed away from the exhaust manifold. The oil filler cap has little holes around them.

Also the rocker cover vent is just a small pipe appeared to be just welded to the cover. No valve inside.

It does look to be rather fumey, however, it also doesn't have Oil Separators either, so may not be as bad as it looks.

Also, what oil is in it?

It is fumey! that's the right word for it. I don't know what the PO used for oil. I just did my first oil change today. Oil smelled like fuel. I just put less than 4 quarts of Valvoline VR1 20W50 and a small 400ml bottle of STP oil additive. I don't want to put too much oil yet. Any suggestions?

So currently I added another fitting from the catch can going to the air inlet filter (kept the carb vent plugged still). Found that the timing chain cover has a welded area where the breather used to be. Not sure what the previous owner was up to but wish they just left it alone.

*So much hoses! Its all temporary now until i figure out what's best but for sure i'll install a vented timing chain cover soon.

If the bore has glazed (and I hate to say, but I feel it may well be), then there's nothing for it other than a bore hone and re-ring. While it's out, sort the breathers properly.

If it hasn't, though, maybe too late by now ??? a Running In Oil and a good hard workout (load not necessarily revs) might help seat the rings.

I think possibly at this point running anything that is too slippery, will only make matters worse.

<EDIT: If you do end up pulling the engine and sorting the breathers while it's out, I would suggest given that this then opens up other options, fitting a later transfer housing that has the breather on that. I found the breathers on the Timing Chain covers not good on right handers ;D >

There may be a pin hole in the fuel pump diaphragm and fuel is finding it's way into the sump - that's if you're running a mechanical pump of course.

no biggie! i'll probably just keep driving it and see. if it comes to a point i'd need rebuilding then i'd go for it and put the right parts for it but for now i'll just do a good periodic checks.
