Just bought a mk1 and PO claimed it only has less than 500 miles on the newly rebuilt engine until I noticed it didn't have any vents except for the rocker cover!!!! I was so focused on the nice restoration of the body that I didn't even put too much attention on the engine much. I know it's my fault. PO isn't a mechanic and would just take the car to different shops nearby.

This engine is a 1275 Austin america with Cooper S head with an early maybe 850 transmission housing. it has Kent 266 cam and straight cut new gears. When i took it home the rocker vent hose was vented to the HIF6 carb which is why I didn't notice the little smoke. As soon as I noticed, I took action by creating a vent from the block's mechanical fuel pump blanking plate to an oil catch can and i rerouted the rocker cover vent to the same catch can and that's when I noticed the little smoke coming out from the air filter of the Moroso can. the smoke appears to just linger and not puffing/ chugging together with the sound of the engine like how you see worse scenarios on youtube. Is there any chance that this engine is still in break in period and i should just change oil and let the rings sit? Or am I doomed and just expect to pull the engine for another rebuild?

update:

was dieseling and running rich which i now corrected and plugged the carb where it used to be vented.

Should have rear valve tappet chest covers with tubular vent pipe, like most 850 and 998 engines. If it hasn't then it's a much later solid block engine which should have the transfer case vent and possibly the timing chain cover vent. Check your engine number here http://www.guess-wor...Tech/engine.htm

no timing chain vent and no transfer case vent like i said. not a cooper S block so no tappet cover vents as well. this is a non cooper S engine.

only rockercover vent when i got it. now it has an extra vent from the mechanical fuel pump blanking plate... just like i said :)

A 1275 Austin America engine is the same design as a Austin 1300GT/Mini 1275GT A series, so no tappet chest covers.

Does it have the blanked off casting on the transfer case where a breather could bolt onto or is it plain?

plain like the 998 and 850. The "ONLY" vent was on the rocker cover but now i added the vent on the mechanical fuel pump blanking plate.

I hope we established that already :)

Anyway i just want to know if this is one of those rare occasions where it's still in breakin period or are my rings prematurely got messed up.

Bore wash (running rich) can cause the bores to glaze.

one way to find out. i'll change the oil as i'd suspect gasoline been diluted in it and will probably affect oil viscosity that protects the cylinder walls... sort of getting it now.

then do a leak down test if there's damage.

You'll need to fit some Crankcase Vents.

With what you have, you can fit a different timing chain cover that has a vent and / or one to the Transfer Housing, which may require removal of the engine if it hasn't been drilled to accept one here (and I don't think it is).

It the Carb doesn't have the CCV Port, then you can fit a PCV Valve which plumbs in to the Inlet Manifold.

Perhaps if you could get some photos up, we can best advise from there.
