The enormous heater matrix/air box in midgets has always had me wondering, are there no better options??
It's bloody horrid to look at and really in-your-face when you look under the bonnet.

Looking good, you dont hang around!
I part restored my 1976 Mg Midget about 5 years ago, converted the rubber bumpers to chrome. It was nice to work on compared with the mini. Good luck

More progress on the Midget the past few days.
The interior is now removed
I needed to set about removing the engine and gearbox next. First the exhaust system was removed, then the prop shaft and gear stick and once the wiring harness was removed from the engine bay and all other connections disconnected, it was ready to come out
Next, i unbolted the gearbox and engine mounts and lifted the two out as one
Next was the turn of the front suspension, hubs and steering rack to come out but as everything was caked in oily sludge, i decided to take it outside and power wash it the get the worst off.
And then removed everything
It's starting to not look like a car anymore from this angle
I was keen to remove the fuel tank next to see if the floor behind it needed any repairs
Tank unbolted and dropped down
And fortunately the floor behind is in perfect condition
I'm going to leave the rear axle in for the time being as there is a panhard rod to fit and the mount needs to be welded to the car.
There is quite a lot of really peely paintwork in the engine bay caused by brake fluid by the looks of things so i wanted to get the rest stripped so i could have a closer look.
So out came the pedal box
It's all really solid with very minimal pitting. It should all clean up rather well.
Here are a few shots of other areas which are in remarkable condition despite the peeling paint and surface rust
Battery/heater tray
So that's about as much as i'm going to be stripping it just now. Once the panhard rod mount is on, I shall strip the underside to bare metal and then the new panels will be fitted before prep and a full respray inside out and underneath.
Ill leave these here......
Cheers

Hi Ben,
Looking great! not too much rust for a 45 year old car
oily sludge is obviously a good rust block and seems typical of anything with an a series engine

You certainly know how to pick the right car Darren.
Both this and the Mini were in great shape rust wise.
I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into this one.
Cheers

Hi Ben,

Roger and I were chatting about the Midget on Friday and were commenting on what a great example it is.
I don't think it's ever been welded..

Hi Ben, when the midget gets rebuilt would you replace the rigid and flexible brake pipes and could you give the dif, engine and gearbox a paint job?

I thought it was a good one, but you're never certain, and when you found the bonnet was a cut and shut I wondered if there would be some other nasties lurking

I was actually going to contact you about that.
Would you like all the brackets, fixings, fittings and heater box done too? Basically all the black bits
