Now the shell is painted, It's time to focus on getting it rolling.
So first up is the rear axle.
I stripped off the springs, brakes and other bits ready for a de-rust and repaint
And nothing wins against the might of the twisted wire brush in a grinder
I then spent some time cleaning up the spring hangers, mounting plates and U bolts before de-greasing and applying black primer
Once that had flashed off, on went the gloss black
I then rolled the engine outside and gave it a through scrub ready to dismantle and prep for paint on monday
Cheers
Ben

Nothing will be happening this year I wouldn't have thought.
On with today's update.I prepped and painted the rear axle, leaf springs and brake drums
And then once dry, I laid everything out ready for re-assembly
I went for gloss black on everything except the brake drums which I did Satin to contrast against the gloss although it doesn't really show in the photos.
I also rolled the shell out of the booth ready for a good clean and sweep so I can get the next lot of stuff in to paint
This afternoon, I removed the gearbox and ancillaries from the engine so I could prep that for paint
That is no de-rusted, de-greased and in the booth ready for primer and paint. I'm going to do the block and head satin black and then the rocker cover, timing chain cover and sump gloss black. I think the starter motor ought to be satin black too.
I failed to get a photo of the prepped engine so ill do that in the morning before I paint it.
Cheers
Ben

Wow.
There's a lot of little bits to prep up and paint.
Remember not to use the twisted knot wheel for too long

There is still lots more bits to do.
Engine is now painted though so it can be refitted to the shell.
And yes, I know about the problems with using the wire wheel for too long....
Did it yesterday. oops

Fantastic work Ben, I'm really enjoying following your rebuild threads.
I've had a quick Google but I can't find anything about using twisted knot wire wheel too long, can you explain?
I do fear I may have just asked where I can find chicken lips though!

I've found they go out of balance quite quickly and vibrate like anything.

As Carlos says, they are quite big and not very well balanced so are very tiring on the arms when using for longer periods of time.
Also beware the flying strands!
