Ben, why do you guys stone chip coat the entire underside of the car? Do you have a lot of loose gravel roads over there? I thought that stuff was for areas that were susceptible to rocks thrown up from the tires, like inner fenders, sills and such.....

Over here they do a proper epoxy seal coat and seam sealer then top coat....seems to hold up just fine. Just curious, seems like all you all are really into that stone chip stuff.

Partly as a belts and braces approach (they use a lot of salt on the roads here) so the better the protection, the better the underside will hopefully last

But also partly I was copying what was there before I started the work

You're doing a great job Ben
Love the look of being body colour underneath not black under seal

Stunning work and attention to detail, I've always wanted a midget with Ashley James hardtop.

Yesterday, I got the inside of the other wing de-rusted.

No pictures of that because it was exactly the same as the other one.

Whilst I was sorting the other wing, I got the first one into primer

And then once the primer had cured, I swapped them round, primed the second wing and started flatting the primer on the first

And the first finished wing ready for top coat

The second wing is nearly flatted as well now. I have done them entirely by hand due to all of the curves and it is well worth the effort.

Well that's the wings sorted now. They were a lot of work but are now in fine shape :-)

Cheers

Ben

Ben, when you top coat the body, do you put all the pieces back together and paint as one, or do you paint the doors, bonnet and wings separately?

Ben, when you top coat the body, do you put all the pieces back together and paint as one, or do you paint the doors, bonnet and wings separately?

The doors, bonnet and bootlid will be painted separately.

The wings are seam sealed to the front panel on the front joins so I have two options.

1. I paint the engine compartment and then bolt on the wings and front panel, seam seal the joins and then paint them on the car

2. I paint the wings and front panel off the car, build up the engine compartment/fit the engine etc and then bolt them on painted, seal the joins and the paint them in after.

I'm leaning more towards option 2 as several of the engine bay components will need to be fitted before the wings because of access...

Cheers

Ben

I have now painted the inside of the shell.

First, the outside needed to be masked up

And then on with the colour

Ill leave that to harden up fully and flat and polish it on Tuesday.

The the rebuild can begin.

I have decided to leave painting the wings and other panels until I'm ready to fit them, that way, there is no chance of them getting damaged in storage

Cheers

Ben

Hi Ben,

Is that just the colour coat or is it clear coated too? How many coats? It looks fantastic!

Hi Ben,

I painted this with solid direct gloss so no clear coat

It only really needs 2 coats but I added a third to give me lots to cut back and machine polish up for maximum depth.

Cheers

Ben
