Recently bought a 80 998 Mini, been slowly upgrading all the usual suspects to get it handling better, however the gear linkage needs overhauled. Had a look underneath the car and the rods are really loose, up top the gear stick is flopping around all over the place, does anyone have a definitive list of parts I need to get things tighter. Planning on a quick shift and replacing the rubber shifter mounts but not sure about the rest??

Thanks, yes, I've seen those, wondering what I need to overhaul the rods themselves, reckon that's the main issue as they are rattling around all over the place...

Yes there are some parts that are replaceable.

And there are some parts thst are not.

Worn roll pins can be changed. The reaction bar bush can be changed. The bronze bushes in the housing are not available but people have been known to make new from suitable parts.

Generally a good lube can help.

A travel reducing gear leaver or as they are incorrectly called a Quick shift. Will just hide most of the issues but will not improve anything.

Thanks, wasn't sure if I could get away without replacing the rods, so a good start point would be roll pins and reaction (steady?) bar bush and the rubber bobbin, as the nylon cups that locate the gear stick don't appear to be available a quick shift would help here right?

Not really. Other than it has a new plastic end piece.

I would just get a replacement gear lever. KAD do a nice standard one.

Note only the lower bar moves the upper is bolted at both ends. If the upper looks like if is moving you most likely need to rubber bobbins at the rear for the mount.

Do a search for "rod change rattle". I read this and followed the advice. Made a huge difference.

Just a quick follow-up question:

On the front end of the change rod, the sleeve that connects it to the trans and is held by the roll pins,  --Should that be a nice

tight fit, or is it normal to have some play/wobble in that sleeve.  --I'm thinking mine has gotten worn in either the sleeve or rod.

I've bought the quick shift, but don't want to waste the effort and still have some slop in the linkage.  --thx

All of the roll pins should have a solid, firm fit in both the sleeves and the various rods. Play will give lost motion at the gear knob.

The sleeve will have a slight wobble on it due to the differing sizes. I've seen people put a home made copper sleeve in it before to tighten it up.

That's for remote gearchanges not rod. There is a link on that page for the rod version, C-22A1751/2

Many thanks to all-

Okay, I'll snag one as I noticed the hole in the sleeve for the rollpin is where the excess play is coming from.

To further tighten up the action, should the stabilizer rod on top be able to rotate freely or should that nut be tightened

until it's set in the correct position?
