On my way home last night my Megane suddenly cut out and now won't re-start. Ended up having to join the RAC and pay a one off fee to get the vehicle home. Its a Y reg 1.6 16v petrol Expression.

It didn't display any symptoms, it just suddenly died without warning while doing about 40mph round a roundabout. Only minutes before this it was running perfectly, even managing to allow me to overtake a few vehicle while going up hill.

I've previously replaced the TDC sensor, coil packs and plugs to cure a misfire. This was less than 6 months ago.

I checked all electrical connectors I could get at while on the side of the road and couldn't find anything loose (coils, TPS, temperature, TDC and the MAP/MAF (not sure which it is))

The fuel pump still primes when I initially turn the key and wait for the lights to go out on the dash.

It turns over fine and the tow truck driver tried putting a jumper battery on which did nothing.

It doesn't sound like the timing belt has gone although haven't had chance to remove the cover to take a look. This morning when I tried it it did try and fire once but then just carried on turning over so I am fairly sure the belt is fine but will check it.

The red light for the immobiliser goes out when I try and start it, I will try with the spare key when I get back.

It has definitely got fuel in it. The gauge says half a tank and as I put £40 worth of petrol in it on Sunday afternoon and haven't done anywhere near enough mileage to have run out.

There is no EM light on the dash yet the bulb illuminates when I turn the ignition on.

I will pull the coils and plugs out and check its got spark once I get back and will check to see if fuel is getting to the engine.

Has anybody got any other suggestions or things I should probably look at before I have to throw in the towel and tow it to a garage

Thanks in advance.

Does it have a fuel cutoff similar to the late Minis that may need resetting?

Cam belt?

Sounds very much like the symptoms of my old alfa 147. The tensioner seized and a 10 cm section of teeth were striped from the belt.

Does it have an OBDii socket? My Honda civic cut out suddenly and couldn't figure out why. Bought a £15 OBD2 code reader and found that a crank sensor had given up. Hopefully it will be something cheap and easy to fix like that. Good luck!

Crankshaft sensor is a common issue on these. I appreciate you've changed it recently though. Check loom isnt rubbing anywhere and shorting the supply to any of the sensors.

I know you said you checked the electrical connectors but this sounds an identical description to a problem I had with mine which turned out to be a problem with the earth on the fuse box. The location of the box is particularly prone to problems apparently.

Thanks for all the replies.

Timing belt has snapped which I'm a little surprised about according to its service history it was done at about 90k. I think the previous owner may have been ripped off.

Now on the hunt for another car. The joys of bangernomics.
