I just thought of something. Would using a centre punch be likely to crack the casting or am I over thinking it?

I doubt it will crack the housing but you're going to find out :D . If you're worried, drill a 2mm pilot hole just into the casting face (while its still rough and will stop a small drill bit from sliding) to act as a centre before you file the flat on it.

Job done. No pilot hole. Dropped centre punch down back of engine onto undertray so just drilled and tapped. No probs no leaks as far as I can tell. mr muscle did the trick and no limp mode so thanks for your help guys.
