Bathurst is a horsepower circuit with a a long straight called Conrod Straight and another up the hill called Mountain Straight.
It is one of our holy days in Australia.
In 1965 Mini's filled the first 9 places!!!!!!!!! Beating Studebaker V8's and our own hot car of the day being an S2 EH Holden. There was probably a couple of 3.8 Mk 2 Jags in the field as well.
There is a story of a Finnish mini rally ace who was very fast but returned one of his lap times a minute slower than all of the rest. When questioned at his next pit stop he revealed that he had rolled his mini at Forest Elbow and that the spectators jumped the fence and pushed him pack onto his wheels.
Bathurst spawned a era of Australian super cars produced by the 3 main manufacturers. Holden (GM), Ford and Chrysler.
Our 4 door FordFalcons became GT's fitted with 289 V8's followed by 302 and 351 cubic inch versions.
The Holden Torana which was basically a long nose Vaxhaull Viva had a 202 cubic inch 6 with triple carbies.
Holden made a wide body version and fitted 308 V8's called the SLR 5000 and the best version called an A9X.
Chrysler made a thing called a Charger which has a wild 265 cu in 6 with triple Webbers.
Ford went over the top with 3 versions of the Falcon called the GTHO.
The Phase 3 version was the fastest 4 door car in the world and a go for a million dollars now.
All of these cars were available off the showroom floor.
The Cooper S Mini is revered along with these cars.
I also own a 1973 Z1 Kawasaki 900 which is also a Bathurst winner.
Just got to save up for a Phase 3 or an A9X now and my life will be complete.
