First off, bog standard MINI One has 90Bhp, Cooper has 115Bhp (more can be tweaked, usually about 138 ish BHP). Yes, the engine for the one and cooper AND the 'S' are all the same engine, just different ECU settings and a blower on the S. All can be converted into each other.
As for the wiring C**p that goes with the Bini, well I'd just junk the whole lot and start from scratch on the engine management side of things. The ECU is no different from any other ECU, just the bini has a Shed-load off other non-essential electrical gubbins that have been shoe-horned into the ECU and BDC control units. Any half decent ECU that is compatable with the various sensors (so that would be almost ANY ecu then) that are NEEDED to run the engine, then have the ECU chiped and remaped to that of a similar spec fuel / ignition map for a MINI ECU / engine. DA DA! a running engine. It's not rocket science, you just need to get a simpler ECU that will work with the parts it connects to, and it's all fairly standard stuff found on any injected car. the trick is to remap the ECU to work correctly with the engine. If it's not NEEDED to make the engine run safely, leave it out.
Remember: "what does it do?, How well does it do it? and What does it do for ME?".
Now by this point the Bini engine will be about as comlicated as the MPI 'A' series, and will have about the same ammount of wiring and tubing / pipe work etc.
Oh, and NO whine from the power steering, as that is not fitted, wouldn't fit the Mini steering rack anyhow, besides that the whine is because the steering pump is electric so it doesn't draw any power from the engine, which is actualy quite a good idea, even if the car does sound like an Airbus A380 aircraft testing the rudder.....
Now comes the tricky part - cramming it into a Mini engine bay......which is about as hard as it is for the usual 16V / V8 lump transplants. So new subframe needs to be made to fit, probably some body adjustments etc.
Now this brings us to the next thing mentioned - The hight of the engine........
Just been out and looked at mine, doesn't seem to be THAT much of a difference in hight, *maybe* two inches at most. So, you could either :
A ) hang the engine an inch and a half lower (adjust whatever neede on the way) and manipulate the bonnet / engine bits to fit.
OR
B ) just stick a ruddy great bonnet scoop / bump / molding / etc. into the top of the bonnet to fit around the engine.
Job done.

I wouldn't say Nev is particularly right...
Yeah ahem I was being a little anti-bini in that little speech

just to add about someone mentioning a lotus engine in a mini,
this is now for sale
http://cgi.ebay.co.u...Vie...A:IT&rd=1.
so you should definately try a cooper engine, or something similar
But that Lotus engine is just a K series engine so nothing new as such...
Regarding the Bini engine, size it up and try, anythings possible.
