Nose is firmly in place and very appreciative of your advice, also accept I will never achieve workshop quality on my old B&D workmate at the back of my garage. But I like doing stuff myself and if it last a few thousand miles that will be a few thousand smiles - then I can do it all over again

Also, if you look carefully you'll see a dark area near the top of the bore, that's at the very top of the ring travel and the color indicates an area that was not touched by the stones - that's where the bore will wear the worst. These bores may not clean up successfully.

Firstly I'd like to say I hope the OP learns something from this thread and heeds the advise from the more experienced members who have posted. In my case I just like to play at the back of the garage and see what I can do, I've spent a couple of hundred quid on parts and my time is free (I've got plenty as I took very early retirement). This engine has done the best part of 100K miles and I was really pleased how good the main bits were when I had it stripped. The rings were worn, so too were the big end shells, the marks on the bores are not noticeable with a finger nail so for what I want the engine to do I think it will do the job. So please bear with me, I know I'm going against common sense (had enough of that when I was a health and safety manager) but I'm doing now what most of you guys probably did as teenagers - experimenting and learning from my mistakes.
This forum is a gold mine of information, and believe me I do take notice, but let's see what happens with my Black & Decker Workmate build - I promise I'll tell all good and bad.............time to start a build thread i think
