So after changing the radiator and hoses, my heater was not getting hot, I thought it was either the heater valve or an air lock, I purchased a new heater valve and fitted it only to discover when I had fitted the new rad and bottom hose recently, I had inadvertently pushed the bottom hose/ heater connection down and caused a kink inside the car.

I also changed the exhaust clamp for a better fitting one, and checked and adjusted the rear brakes, so the car is now ready to use and enjoy.

I took the Mini out for a run in the sun today and parked in the road opposite where we normally stop for a coffee and watch people admire and take pictures of the Mini.

I noticed an elderly gentleman reversing into a space in front of the Mini, when the unthinkable happens and he reverses into my car, I was up out of my seat and crossing the road when he did the same again, I managed to get to the car and bang on his rear screen before he did the same for the 3rd time. The guy was 95 years old and deaf and refused to give me insurance details as he didn't want to go through insurance, I said to him that all I wanted was my car to be put back to the condition it was in before he damaged it, I also told him that parts alone for a bumper and grille would be in the region of £400 if suitable replacements were available.

I have informed my insurance company should the guy decide that this is to expensive for him.

When my wife came to view the damage she asked the guy if his wife who was in the car was OK, he said she is fine and is used to these things?

Oh no! Your car is like a magnet for people reversing into it as I remember a near miss while I was chatting to you at Sandown.

I just hope the damage is easily fixed and confined to the bumper and grille

I'm sorry this happened to you and your mini.

- Should you contact the police upon his denial to provide details?

He could still pay you directly before you report to his insurance company, if he likes; but is he not required to provide details upon inflicting damage?

At least you have reported to your insurer.

I dread leaving my mini anywhere. I will not leave it unless I can be nearby within easy reach.
Morons with large pick-up trucks like to get super close and most would not be able to see the mini in the rear view mirror if they parked next to it...

A smack from a huge SUV door would result in a massive ding.

- It never fails that some goon will want to prove how strong he is by attempting to it up pick it up. I dread this as grabbing it by the arch or any other appendage would result in something being ripped off...

Or some silly woman (usually) will want to sit on it to take a picture (what the h*ll!!!) - they won't even ask first...

- Rant over.

What a nightmare! Sounds like he shouldn't be on the road.
The one saving grace is that you saw it happen and shot across the road...would he have left a nite under your wiper if you'd not been in the local vicinity?

That's correct it must be the colour that attracts bad drivers, about 4 or 5 years ago I had someone cave in the passenger door and wing whilst I was parked without leaving there details.

I don't think he would have left a note, his bumper tells that it has hit numerous cars/objects. Other people in the cafe' couldn't believe what they witnessed.

Report it to the police.  I think it's illegal to withhold insurance details.  Also, he should not be on the road.  Next time it could be a child.

It sounds like he's reached that time of life we are all dreading, the point you should no longer be on the road. The resistance of wanting his insurance to know could mean he's worried about them intervening, after multiple claims?, and starting the ball rolling to him never driving again. I feel for him from that point, but if he was potentially going to to disappear without leaving any details, then he needs reporting.

Hi,

Definitely report him to the police and inform them that he would not give his insurance details, apparently it is an offence not to. Hopefully you have witnesses from the cafe that can confirm what happened.

If the police follow up on what you tell them, which they should do if you tell them he was 91, they can have his license cancelled if they think he is unfit to be on the road. Yes it is not nice to do but as floormanager says

that could have been a child he reversed into.

I hope he comes good and pays for the damage, if the front panel is also damaged he could be in for a hefty bill. If you go through your insurance you could well be out of pocket, I've been there

I think it's time for him to hang his keys up

The damage looks only to be bumper, grille, and spotlights, I am going to take all the bits off to ensure that is the case, if any bodywork is required then it's definitely going back to Ben.

Hi Paddy

I haven't reported him to the Police but I have a quotation for the damage and will be meeting the guy today to discuss the repairs. I won't put the reasons for not contacting the Police on the forum but there are a number of mitigating factors in the case.
