Hi!

My key has gotten really hard to remove from the ignition lately. It's always been a bit stubborn, but the past weeks I've spent several minutes carefully jiggling the key out of the barrel every time I leave the car. It slides in pretty easily, and it turns just fine.

I've tried searching Google and the forum on this matter, but I've only found information on problems relating to the steering wheel lock or cars with auto transmissions. My issue seems purely like some physical blockage inside the barrel.

How can I fix this? Do I have to replace the ignition barrel, or is there a way to clean/lubricate it? Can I just spray WD40 in there?

My car is a 1992 Rover Mini Cooper, carb 1.3, manual.

Thanks in advance.

Mine did this a while ago, if you take the steering column cover off and look where the wires fasten into the barrel, there was 3 indentations that kept it from falling out these were loose. I took barrel off and knocked them up tighter.

It did last for about 6 months then it got worse so I replaced it. Hope this makes sense and is a similar problem you're having.
