Hi;

I picked up what I think was a lucky find at an auto jumble. I believe it to be an HIF38 Carb for an absolute bargain price?

I may refurbish it and sell it on or fit it to my car?

Anyway, couple of questions:

1. What would I need to fit it to my standard 1982 HLE 1000?

2. What performance benefits would I see?

3. What would it be worth?

Thanks

You'll need the hif38 attachment plate and carb spacer.

2. What performance benefits would I see?

Little to none. As the Hi38 is exactly the same size as the Hs4 witch would be fitted as standard to an 82, 998. As the only difference is the float bowl is under the carb and not bolted onto the side.

one problem you may have , is that the float bowl is close to the bulk head

so you may have to move the top of the engine forward a bit

also the float bowl is over the centre exhaust port , which can warm the fuel a bit too much when stationary

but all fixable

OK so no performance increase. So what would it be worth S/H if I refurbished it?

eBay showing sold listings anywhere from £30 to £80 (with a few outliers higher and lower).

The HIF38 carries a lower premium than a 44 so unless you paid a really low price (i.e. £10 or less), once you include the price a full rebuild kit it'll be hit or miss whether you make your money back.

Clean it, rebuild it, put it on the shelf as a spare.

I paid £15, thought I had a bargain, looks like I'll break even :-)
