It certainly does sound like a clutch problem. Either a slipping clutch caused by a worn or oil-contaminated centre plate of a partly seized clutch arm/clevis pin/plunger.

To the OP I must say that if you are going to run an old classic car you will need to get up to speed mechanically very quickly, unless you have a lot of spare cash  ;DBut we are all here to help as you develop those skills.

This reminds me of the apprentice at work in 1973 who insisted on changing his head gasket to solve clutch slip, or was it the other way round? Anyway the point is that he could not distinguish one from the other. And yes, it was a Mini, possibly a Traveller.

The prime test for clutch slip is to try going uphill in a high gear, when high torque is needed. Even without a tacho, the disproportionate increase in engine revs is plainly audible.

Thanks all for your input. Definitely sounds like the clutch is slipping for sure, based on all your advise.

I rang mini hospital yesterday in Npton but got no reply, was planning to head there when i visit home.

Anyone in Herts recommend a reliable mechanic?

PS: i automatically check what gear i'm in when it slips so not a case of simply forgetting to change gear haha!!!! Although I wish it was, would save me a bit of cash!

Hi guys,
I had the clutch arm replaced beginning of this year.
Seemed to resolve the issue for a while. But as of this morning I cant get it into gear,hi revs are back and 1st gear inaccessible.

Desperate to find a good local mechanic in hertfordshire if anyone knows one?
Now that my clutch is dead :-(

Has the throw out stop been set correctly. A quick way to see if clutch is slipping is pull the handbrake on firm , try pulling away in gear if the engine is revving like mad clutch problem if it stalls straight away clutch is usually ok.
