Modern Mini Flasher Unit?

Hi All

 

I've the age-old Mini feature that if an indicator bulb blows the remaining working light stays on permanently  

 

Does a flasher unit now exist that stops this happening? i.e. one that is electronic rather than one that functions based on current?

It is a legal requirement that you get some sort of indication if a bulb has blown. That is why it works that way. You could in theory devise an electronic flasher circuit that did not do that, but you might then be driving about a failed indicator for a long time without noticing, which could be dangerous. S0me modern cars do the flashing in the central computer and monitor the current to each lamp, and a dashboard warning comes up if a bulb fails.

All you need is an electronic flasher relay with all cars from the mid 90's use (plenty on eBay) and wire it as so.

Make an earth wire to a good earthing point and put it on terminal 31

With a test lamp (or multimeter) switch the ignition on and find the permanent live to your current flasher relay, connect to pin 49, then the other wire connect it to the remaining pin 49a.

 

As for the tell tale if a bulb is blown, that's just tiger99 scare mongering yet again. You don't have any warning systems or lights for the brake lights, so how would you know (without getting out to check) that your brake light/s have just failed? The only reason why the remaining indicator stays on with one less bulb working ,is there isn't enough current through the flasher unit to heat up the strip and brake the contact.

On modern cars you actually do have systems for monitoring brake light failure, and ensuring that safety systems are working as they should is far from scaremongering. Unfortunately there is a yahoo element that persist in undermining every safety feature built into just about anything, most commonly because they have no comprehension of basic engineering or the logical comprehension of cause and effect..

But completely irrelevant when we are talking about minis with basic wiring, not some new modern car with a computer for each an every individual system.

Be aware that the electronic units require you to do a bit of re-wiring as the pins are in a different place and also require an earth. They don't simply plug in.

There are some about like that, but all the ones I've bought over the years (some I linked up above) were direct replacements, same pin arrangement and no separate Earths needed - Plug'n'Play.

 

I have seen in more recent times though they types to which you have referred to here, in fact I think I might even have some in the draw!

I rummage scrap yards for old ford's and rover / Austin / ldv foe the relays and they are usually 3 pin electronic jobbies.

If you fancy selling what you have I'd take them off your hands

If you fancy selling what you have I'd take them off your hands

 

Happy to sell them to you but try these, the last two links are a UK supplier and i think reasonably priced, no need to scrounge the scrap yards!

 

The second link has one that includes a blown bulb indication.
