I'm currently rebuilding my 998 engine and I would like to Gas-Flow the head. What is involved in Gas-Flowing the head? I know that reducing the 'V' in the chamber and reshaping the throats around the valves would make an improvement as well skimming the head to get the compression ratio up. Is there anything else that would make an improvement?

The head is a completely standard and un-modified CAM4810 head. The engine will be running a Kent 256 cam, Twin HS2 carbs and Maniflow Freeflow manifold and Maniflow 1.75 inch single silencer stainless steel exhaust.

I won't be doing the work myself as I don't have the equipment or skill so will be getting a machine shop to do the work.

Thank you,

James C.

get hold of David Vizards book "how to modify BLs A series engine" it will tell you everything you need to know.

or just buy a head off the self from someone like Minispares.

As suggested above, get hold of a copy of Vizards "Tuning the A-series engine". This has a huge section on modifying heads, and though a little outdated now, if you follow this book you won't go to far wrong and will produce a decent cylinder head. Even if you're not doing the work yourself it will give you an idea what you're looking for.
Make sure the machine shop knows what they're doing if you're going to get them to modify it. A lot of generic machine shops are fine doing everyday work like skimming and reboring blocks, but don't have a clue when it comes to properly working a head.

Listen to what Phil says. Most commercial machine shops haven't got a clue in respect of improving heads for 60 year old designed engines.
If you can't DIY then let a specialist such-and-such as Phil do the head work and know that it will be correct and good.

Thanks for the advice, a copy of David Vizard's book is on the shopping list. There are a couple of machine shops near me so I'll do a bit of research before starting the work.

Machine shops are not normally capable of gas flowing Mini heads. They simply don't have the knowledge to do it properly.
You need a company with a lot of classic car head experience.
Turbo Phil (on here) does excellent work. Also Rob Walker Engineering in Witney are excellent.

Do you know of anyone in or around Northampton or Milton Keynes or Rugby areas that would be able to carry the work? As I'd rather not travel much further than that as I live in Northampton.

Thanks,

James.

James - call into Mini Bitz, on Bruce Street (opposite the Saints) and they'll be able to let you know of places in the area that can do it.
