Looking good

Are you gonna paint it yourself?
Keep up the good work and I hope yo7 get a lot of positive energy from this project.

Yes that's the plan at least, i have my mate bugging me to get it over to his workshop for paint but i have a few more things to do before i'll be happy to let it go, I'm not rushing the prep work on this one.

Excellent work - hope it's keeping your mind off your situation. With regard to colour there probably aren't so many cars in that original shade but the grey does look lovely and may suit your Mk1 theme better. What wheels are you going for? OEW 10" steels look most period.

I have a neighbour who loves that colour (and actually its growing on me) but i have the grey now and it does suit the Mk1 theme better i think. wheel wise most likely i'll be going for some nice skinny 4.5x10 minilites, i did originally fancy a nice set of black rose petals but they're a bit on the pricey side.

Currently trying to tackle the Mk1 boot conversion panel from P & L which is testing my fabrication skills to the max. Did you do a conversion on yours or did you go for a new boot ??

I can only work on certain parts of the car at a time which is useful because it keeps me focused, as for the spraying its pretty much the same story small patches and always with the main door open.

With the fresh paint now dry, I've started rebuilding the upper and lower arms ready to start assembly of the front sub frame.

I'm going to be cleaning up a couple of spare front hubs simply to get it rolling, so i can refurb my disc brakes whilst the cars at my mates.

Why is it that the quick little jobs always take the longest ????

Took advantage of the break in the weather and dragged the front subframe out into the sun, ready to start building it up.

So.... the plan was just to bolt on the upper and lower arms in the state they were.......................but.....................I decided to swap out the bearings in the top arms as i had a repair kit and a shiny new bearing puller ready to go. It didn't go well

Luckily, only one played up, the other three came out fine.

Once I'd ground out the problem bearing and removed the remnants, refitting went relatively smoothly.

To put the bearings back in I use my cone compressor to pul them in.

I'm not a big fan of hitting new bearings with a hammer, especially given how brittle they are. The cone compressor is ideal as it pulls them in nice and smooth and is also the right diameter to pull the bearing inside the housing slightly.

And this is what i ended up with.

Still didn't get the subframe built up............

OK so my dog decided to eat half a box of chocolate cookies tonight, so after a short trip to the out of hours vet to have his stomach pumped (and lightening my wallet by a couple of hundred quid) what else could i do at 2 in the morning whilst on doggy watch but build up the previously unfinished subframe.

It's just standard 2k gloss black.

Actually quite a tough coating (as i've bashed and scraped it already) did toy with the idea of powder coating but.......one, i'm too lazy to find a decent powder coat'er and Two I'm cheap !

Powder coating is nice, but expensive and can chip from edges. I did my motorbike frame, came out nice, but a couple of years down the road I regret it a bit. Some chps and matting that is hard to polish up.

Think just painting / spraying 2K is cheaper and just as good for these type of parts.

What 2K brand/type did you use may ask?

I have heard that of powder coating, plus the paint I can just touch up as necessary

The paint is just a bog standard, direct gloss off ebay

It's the paint i intend to use on the roof, so it should give me time to see if my cheap nature is going to give me any issues further down the line.

Not that much to report this week, managed to get the subframes and wheels on but still need to push it outside to get it off the dolly as there's not enough room in the garage to get it out from under the car.

I have, however been distracting myself with things that could have waited until the shell was finished. namely the front hubs which got a quick seeing to with the sand blaster.

Also took off the steering arms and gave them a quick clean and coat of etch.
