Original Or Later Wider Windscreen Rubber?

Was going to hijack Andyt's thread on windscreen sealant but thought I better start a new one  ;D 

I wondered what the consensus was on the thicker windscreen rubber (introduced post '91 I think) versus the original earlier type width? Need to replace it on both my '90 Cooper and '88 Designer and have come across conflicting reports of whether the wider rubber actually keeps out more water (as it was intended to do) or encourages the water to stay trapped under the wider lip. Would appreciate all opinions / experiences

Also, tips for recommended suppliers of best quality seals welcomed as that seems like a minefield these days too ... thanks in advance.

I fitted a standard seal to my mates clubman recently which was from phoenix rubbers I have also had door and boot seals from them with for my mk1 as they do alot of different profiles. http://www.phoenixtr...CATALOGUES.aspx

I think that Minispares sum up the choice below.......= more rust!

 

"Fitted from 1996 on MPI cars it has an extra lip to give a neater seal line.
Although designed to stop windscreens from leaking this does hold water under the extra lip causing rust on the bodywork aperture if the rubber is perishing or going hard through weather exposure--to save rust many owners now fit the earlier rubber-see CZH1719MS for earlier type.
Fit rubber onto body first, then fit glass into rubber.
Our rubbers are best quality from UK supplier tried and tested so beware of all the cheap rubbers available."

I think the windscreen glass is also thicker and heavier (6mm) in the MPI to meet later safety regulations.

Thanks both, had some opening window trim from Phoenix which was decent, and a better fit than some I got from Minispeed, which just seems too big for the window to close properly.

That's what I'd read, but after posting this yesterday the windscreen chap who my resto guy uses to get screens in and out safely (on all sorts of classics, not just minis) recommended the wider type, as long as they're new. Which I guess tallies with the line from Minispares about hardening through weather exposure ... Minefield I tell ya!  :D  :nuke:  >_<  :!:

I have to wonder if anyone has tried welding some metal around the aperture to create an overlap and bonding the windscreen as in a modern car? They rarely leak and there is a viable process for removing and refitting them if necessary.

The bonded in glass on modern cars also contributes the structural integrity of the bodyshell so I wonder if bonded glass might crack in the Mini shell or add further rigidity?
