I got one of the four bolts holding the water pump pulley to the pump itself off but the other 3 are tough, it doesn't help that the pulley turns so I can't get leverage, i notice all four washers are split, I'm a newb, are they supposed to be that way for some reason? - seems like a heck of a coincidence if not...

I'm going to try again tomorrow, the best suggestion from the following thread for me was to put it in gear and have someone hold the brake down.

I wonder if anyone has any other tips that can help me.

Thanks.

Hold the fan.

Re fit the belt and tension it and get each one moving on its own oil refit. Repeat when all lose remove.

Or take pump off and clamp the rotor in a vice.

It all depends on what you are doing and planing to change.

I'm re fitting the head which has been skimmed so I'm changing some parts whilst i'm in there, thermostat, water pump, oil filter, belt, gaskets, the rads out too as I'm giving it a paint.

I don't own a clamp that will fit so I can't use that option

I don't understand what you mean here: "Re fit the belt and tension it and get each one moving on its own oil refit. Repeat when all lose remove."

Thanks for your reply. It's '99 MPi if that matters any.

He means take one out and refit it just tight enough to hold the pulley (and belt tension) so you can do the same to the others.

You could also try a Tommy bar, drill or anything that turns the bolt equally around its axis. A spanner levers from one side only, so is as likely to turn the pump as the bolt.

Split washers or normally called Spring washers so yes the should be like that. When you take them off and they are now flat then bin them and buy new ones. The whole idea of them is to aid locking of the bolt.

In the end my neighbour lent me a strap, it had a socket fitting on it, I wrapped the strap around the pulley whilst looping over itself slightly then attached my 3/8 wrench to it for leverage and to tighten it up. It worked a treat, not sure if there's a specific name for it, or the socket fitting but it was bloody handy. Thanks for all your replies

You can make an excellent strap wrench for that purpose from an old fan belt and a piece if steel tube.
