Hi all,
I am trying to fit an old Smiths 80mm Tachometer and need some assistance with the wiring please.
Here is a picture of the back of the gauge. The engine is a late type 1275 with electronic ignition.
Many thanks,
Tim

See Doug's post in this thread: http://www.theminifo...hs-rev-counter/
You have the RV1 with induction loop sensor

After installing and going for a drive I found that the engine will not rev. It hesitates at anything over 3,000 rpm. After disconnecting the wire from the coil everything was ok again. Assuming that This does mean that the RC1 gauge I have is not compatible with electronic ignition.
Would you all recommend that I try and find a RCV gauge instead? Do they make them in the same sort of style?

As we can't see the dial it's had to say but yes, Smiths do them in RVC mode. http://www.smiths-in...s.co.uk/classic

Bare in mind those old 8omm rev counters are getting on a bit, I have had several MGBs in where the rev counter bounce has to be seen to be believed to the point when on/off the throttle there almost unusable, They were not that well damped when new, If I was you I would get one of the newer Smiths but they are expensive, but there are others you could use for around £30.
Be aware of the ones that come of of the later MPi cars with coil packs, they read double the rpm in a distributor driven engine. there is a mod but again its cost vs time vs skill
