I had the C8E spark plugs in mine, again similar to what you are saying, too cold.
I've swapped to Ngk PMR7A which are a range hotter, plus they are a smaller platinum tip and reach slightly more into the combustion chamber which has helped cure the spark plug fouling for me. NGK 8 heat range plugs are too cold for a fast road engine. My brother runs 7's on his Mk3 Cooper S Road Racer that he won his class in on the hill climb over here (again). They run spot on too.
Also NGK C8E were fitted to the F40 and the PMR7A to the F355, so if they are good enough for Ferrari...

Have PMR7A's in my Alfa along with the 2nd plugs! Yes, two per cylinder and two different plugs (one large, one small). Good job NGK Platinums last 60,000 miles (or 70,000 if you are careful!)

By the way it is NOT a clutch breather. It is a transfer case breather. You really do not want your hopefully clean and oil free clutch casing connected in any way to the breather system.

Ok so I got the technical name a little wrong, but everyone new what I meant, sorry.

Quick update: the morning runs were going really well until I devolved a horrible backfire which appeared to be coming out of one of the trumpets on the left hand carb, lots of head scratching to try and work out what the problem could be and in a vain attempt I removed the cards and changed the plugs to the newer hotter NGK C7E's, the old ones where all sooted up again, and that was after them been cleaned on Sunday, anyway that didn't fix it so a quick call to the main Man Peter Baldwin...............possible sticky valve???

Took rocker cover off and the valve adjust on valve furthest from rad had become very loose and after much faffing about managed to tighten it up to the correct gap............then ha presto it fired back into life, much to my relief it was back to life again, so by 3 o'clock I was back on track getting my driver tuition session and then  a few more runs until we ran out of time.

I think I'll have to get a proper catcher tank as had a little bit of oil splutter from my temp solution.

And I'll have a look at those NGK  PMR7A as well.

Thanks you all very much for your help, got there in the end.

Sooting up may not be the plug but the mixture ..

PMR7As are also platuinum tpped with built in resistors so check you can use them with your leads .. they are also a LOT more expensive.

So your x-flow head uses 10mm plugs .. the old 5 port uses 14mm ones.

I hope it's not the mixture, as it was rolling road tuned by Peter Baldwin back at Easter time after the head was installed.

How do I check that I could use the PMR7A's with my leads, think I've got Luminition ones at the moment.

Yes 10mm plugs.

Have you got a pic of the old plugs after you've taken them out? That might help ...

As for plugs and leads, not 100% sure but NGK say their resistor plugs can be used in most cars without detrimental affect.

The PMRA 7's were a straight swap with the C8E. The fact that they have a resistor in them will make no difference. Check out NGK'S website on this fact just to put your own mind at ease. Minisport recommend the PMR8A for their 7 port which is their version of the AKM 7 port that I have. 8's are too cold which is why I went for the 7's. More expensive due to the platinum tip but because it's smaller it too helps to stop any fouling plus they last a lot longer. Being honest if the C7E's are working for you I'd stick with them for a bit, saves a few quid plus you don't have to take the carbs off again, but it's your choice at the end of the day. I'll see where I got mine from, seem to remember I got them at a good price.

PMR7A's are fitted to a lot of moderns so find one and don't mention "Classic Mini" ... Alfa Romeo 156 JTS is one ... ;-)

Think your right, I'll leave the 7's in for now and see how they go, just means I'll have to take it out more😈

Thanks for all your help.

I'm also looking at the ITG air filters

So I fitted the 7's midway through my last track day, so they've done 1/2 day on track and a few trips to work & back, but looks like I have the same issue all over again.

Wouldn't start at the weekend, took them all out cleaned them (as best I could, fine wire brush & some carb cleaner) but it still won't start plus I think I flooded it in the process!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suppose I could go with the PMR7A's and happy to, it's just that they would appear to be about £11.50 ea, so thats £46 for 4, I know that's not much but another waste of money if they don't work!!!!

Anyone got any bright ideas?
