OK, cheers. Not great news on this.
Exhaust everything else that's been suggested first, however, these are not brilliant pumps. It may not be the problem you are having and if it turns out not to be the issue, I would strongly recommend replacing it if you have the engine out for some other reason.
The steel backed pumps are quite good, but just having a look now it seems that they are hard to come by for the small bore engines, it may come down to lashing out for an evo pump

hopefully its not too serious, prime the pump as described its only a small hole so it takes a bit of time to get sufficient oil back into the pump. When your ready make sure the battery is fully charged, a point that has not been responded too was Nick's comment to remove all 4 plugs, take those out first. Spin it over for a good 30-45 seconds and you should get oil pressure.

When I took the plugs out and spun it over it sounded like an electric motor. I take it that's normal as there is nothing to compress?hopefully its not too serious, prime the pump as described its only a small hole so it takes a bit of time to get sufficient oil back into the pump. 1. prime via the big banjo bolt.
2. Take plugs out.
3. Turn over fast with full battery.

when priming the pump make sure you know how many washers and bolts you undo.
should be 1 banjo bolt and 2 washers, one each side of the banjo.

Then I run the other car at around 1500 rpm. That way the new engine can be spun over at the best possible speed for quite a long time. I think the longest I have ever cranked to get initial pressure is about 1 minute.

that is all it is.

You should also have the plugs out not only to turn it over faster and have the battery last longer, but most importantly, so you don't load the crank bearings.
