Fantastic build diary and a wonderful Mini to cherish. Workmanship is top quality.
I have one question, surely the open capped sills will let water and crud into the sills? I have just rebuilt my Mini but I used Minimail sills which are enclosed for this reason.
Going through a Ford will surely let water get inside them?
Thanks for the compliments.
The open or 'vented' sills as fitted to this car are the correct pressings for this car and all Mini's should and would have had this type of sill.
The idea of the openings are to vent the inner sills to stop moisture build up and with this design, any wet inside will be able to drain out.
Providing that the box section within is adequately protected, they are perfectly good.
The closed type sill or 'coversill' that you are talking about are not recommended as they reduce the strength in this sill box section and also trap moisture leading to premature rusting and once the rust sets in, it can do a lot of damage.
I have removed these sills many times in favour of the correct narrow type vented sill and have always had lots of repairs or often complete replacement of the inner sill due to excessive corrosion.
Take a look here to see what i mean http://www.theminifo...?hl= coversills
Cheers
