I have a 1989 mini 1000. I have just converted to electronic ignition. Should I continue to use ngk bp6es or should I now use bpr6es?
Thanks

You should change to the one with resistor in it which is denoted by the extra R.

I can't comment on the heat range i.e. the number as do not know what state of tune your engine is.

The resistor is for EMC compliance and probably has nothing much to do with what type of ignition is in use. It has more to do with whether you are using resistive or plain copper plug leads. Neither resistive leads nor resistive plugs are the correct thing, merely bodges by penny-pinching manufacturers to scrape through the legal requirements. The aircraft industry has a better way of doing it, with screened leads, plug covers and distributor cap and no problematic resistors.

If in the slightest doubt fit the R version, as radiating ignition interference is highly antisocial, illegal (there are prosecutions from time to time) and dangerous, because the interference can upset computers and such like on nearby vehicles, possibly causing uncommented acceleration or ABS malfunction. Any yes, effects such as these have really been observed.

In actual fact your Mini is unlikely to be as badly behaved as to upset someone else's car, but if it interferes with Coronation Street or East Enders your neighbour may report it.

Luckily, we don't have Coronation St or Eastenders here in Italy.
Thanks for the interesting info.

I have lumenition coil and leads (silicone) fitted. What do you mean by resistor leads?
Thanks

I will ask again.

Why do you think you need to change your plugs?

So far I have seen nothing to suggest that you need to.

The coil and silicone leads are Lumenition. The electronic part in the distributor is from mini spares and is either Aldon or Lumenition. I think these kits are all very similar

I also have a 91 Cooper with carb, electronic ignition as standard and I fit the r plug. I just thought that this would also apply to a dizzy conversion

As previously posted this link from NGK tells you when you need to change to R type resistor spark plugs.  This is from the manufacturer so I think they will know best!

If you have resistor ignition leads then there is no need to have them in your spark plugs as well as you already have the resistor part.

You need these NGK - 2023 BPR7ES as recommended by Aldon

I would check what colour your spark plugs currently are before changing to a colder heat range.  I've swapped from 8's to 7's because they were too cold a plug and that is on my 7 Port with an SW10 cam, billet crank etc. and putting out some serious power.

My brother uses 7's on his very highly tuned road racer and they run absolutely spot on so on a mild state of tune engine you may find the 6's are the correct plug.  As I said checking the colour will help give you an idea if the rest of your engine is in a good state of tune..
