Modern fuel has left a dark slightly sticky residue over the inside of the carb. And has caused the accelerator pump plunger to get stuck.

Need something strong to dissolve this crud. The current carb cleaner says it works in minutes but the plunger ain't moving after hours.

Anything goes as the carb is off the car. (TNT excepted).

I use an ultrasonic cleaner - cost about £30 from EBay IIRC.
Strip the carb down, pop it in for a few minutes and job's a good 'un. Sometimes need a couple of cycles for really caked on jobs.
I've tried a variety of cleaning solutions in the cleaner but find hot water and white vinegar works as well as anything.

If cellulose thinners does not shift it then a 'traditional' solvent such as trike would be my next choice.

But not easy to get hold of these days.

Aerosol carb cleaner, I think brake&clutch solvent type cleaners also work well. ultrasonic really isn't that effective on stubborn patches of fuel residue, i've always found plenty of swilling around with the solvent cleaner, then ultrasonic bath works best. BUT at a pinch all you need are some brushes, paper towel, cleaner and patience.

A great solvent/degreaser that I have found is Fastklean which is made by Arrow.

Nope carb cleaner was useless. But the coke did the job.
