Hello,

I have just put my standard mini 850 back on the road.

I only bought the car in March and it has been off the road for at least 12 years, so don't know the history all too well.

It drives great but when taking foot off the accelerator there is often a knock in the exhaust tunnel. i have had a look at the exhaust which seems solid and not hitting the bodywork.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Cheers

Cheers guys.

Engine moving loads, you can clearly see the rear steady rubber is shot.

Is it just a case of replacing the rubber? Looks pretty straight forward, no little issues or anomolies anyone can think of?

Thanks for your help.

Pretty much, just the bolts can be rusted so spray them with penetrating fluid and loosen them a tad, tighten them, loosen etc until it comes undone.

Just pre-emepting the next issue. I have ordered new bushes and taken the steady out. I have managed to prize the old rubbers out. Is there a trick/technique to get the new ones in? Or do they actually go in OK with a little help?

Cheers

Swear a lot, use a long nut and bolt with washers to make a sandwich and squeeze the rubbers into place - washer-rubber / rubber washer nut bolt spacer down the middle

I have fitted new polyurethane bushes and the engine is solid as a rock.

No change in the test drive, still a knocking sound from the tunnel quite far back below the rear seats. I have put my hand on the tunnel and forced the noise and can definitely feel what can only be the exhaust knocking.

I have then jacked it up once home and the exhaust seems solid enough. There is some movement but no more than I would expect.

It appears that it must be the exhaust?!?

Am I missing something.

May take it to my local exhaust place to fully check it out.

Hi Mini Oll, I'm having exactly the same problem - a knocking sound from the rear tunnel when decelerating. You can hear the exhaust hit if you put your hand on it. The previous owner fitted an aftermarket exhaust, and when I looked underneath the car I noticed that the seat belt (I think) bolts are just about touching the exhaust....

I think this is the problem...please let me know what your local exhaust place says...

Thanks!

Ahhhh, the bolts!

That would make sense, certainly regards the location.

Will still take it in to see if any ideas.

It turns out the middle bracket was cracked.

£5 for a new bracket fitted and now sorted.

Cheers
