You can have a trailer downgraded on it's tag to bring it inline with the vehicle you want to use for towing but you would still need a trailer test pass. The horsey girls do it around here so they can tow horse boxes with smaller cars where they only have a small pony in the horse box, the only thing is the trailer can only legally carry the tagged weight even though mechanically it's identically to one with a 3500kg tag.

A link before someone says I'm talking crap again :-)

Ignor the fact it's about horses, our little minis create the same situation. They call it downplating.

Downplating is common in the commercial automotive sector. Trucks and vans can be down plated also.

Also often done to get campers into the LEZ.

REMEMBER the weights stated on the DVLA pages are not the actual weights.

Bit of a mess aint it!? I've got a mate with a T5 that has got his good vehicle speed restriction removed, couple of photos and a covering letter was all it took.

The easiest way is to do your test.
I towed mine a couple of times before I did my test it's not worth the risk my van is a t30 so all I could toe was a light trailer

it took me 2 hour lessons then another hour and a half for my test.

That's a neat little trailer, suits a Mini perfectly!

One of the few benefits of being 40+ is having passed my test in 1991 theres none of this nonsense about towing weights. I towed a twin axle caravan when I was still 17 just after passing my test.

I used to tow for a living in my job.... I would be towing anything from an unloaded plant trailer to a plant trailer with a 1.5tonne digger on it...

I was trained to understand that because of my licence being in the E class I can tow anything as long as the total train weight doesn't exceed 3500Kg....

I am led to believe that the new licences now cannot tow anything over 750Kg....

I tow a 1.4tonne single axle 6 berth caravan with my Vauxhall Omega V6... I passed my test when I was 19, am now 45 so have grandad rights on my licence :)

I used to tow a 1.4 tonne 4 berth Lunar twin axle caravan with the same car.... total train weight would be just on the legal limit for towing...

I even used my Omega to bring my Mini home on a trailer....

I dont worry about towing anything, Im quite good at it to be honest and can reverse down a street and round a corner without a problem too :)
